LabourDispute – Tension gripped the Motahaldu locality in Haldwani, located in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district, on Monday after a large group of workers employed at a private manufacturing unit staged a protest over wages and working conditions. The demonstration led to a confrontation with police personnel, prompting authorities to step in and restore order.

Protest Escalates at Factory Premises
According to local officials, several hundred workers gathered at the factory entrance and began a sit-in, demanding immediate attention to their grievances. The protest remained peaceful initially but soon turned tense as disagreements arose between police officers and individuals supporting the agitation. Eyewitnesses reported that the situation intensified quickly, resulting in a brief scuffle between both sides.
To prevent further escalation, police used limited force to disperse the crowd. Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been brought under control, though security remained heightened in the area as a precautionary measure.
Key Demands Raised by Workers
The protesting employees, estimated to be around 500 in number, included a significant number of women. They called for a minimum monthly salary of Rs 20,000 and insisted on strictly enforcing an eight-hour workday. Workers alleged that they were frequently required to work beyond scheduled hours without fair compensation.
Many participants accused the company management of unfair labour practices, claiming that overtime work often went unpaid. They also expressed concerns about what they described as exploitative conditions that have persisted for an extended period.
Allegations of Workplace Misconduct
Women workers, in particular, voiced serious concerns regarding their treatment at the workplace. They alleged that basic facilities such as access to drinking water and regular washroom breaks were restricted. Some also claimed that they had been subjected to inappropriate language and behaviour by certain supervisory staff.
These allegations added a new dimension to the protest, drawing attention not only to financial issues but also to workplace dignity and employee welfare.
Job Security and Transport Concerns
Another major issue raised during the demonstration was job insecurity. Workers claimed that several employees had been dismissed without clear justification, creating fear and uncertainty among the remaining staff. Protesters demanded that those who had been terminated be reinstated and that transparent policies be introduced regarding employment decisions.
In addition, concerns were raised about the company’s transport arrangements. Workers alleged that buses provided for commuting were poorly maintained and that some drivers engaged in unsafe or inappropriate conduct. They argued that these issues posed risks to employee safety, particularly for women.
Local Leadership Steps In
Amid rising tensions, local MLA Mohan Singh Bisht visited the protest site to engage with both workers and management representatives. He held discussions in the presence of administrative officials and urged the company to address the concerns raised by employees.
Bisht stated that he had requested the management to seriously consider the workers’ demands and assured that he would escalate the matter to higher authorities if needed. His intervention appeared to help calm the situation to some extent.
Police Maintain Vigil After Incident
Police officials confirmed that law and order had been restored following the brief clash. Shankar Singh Nayal, in charge of the Haldichaur outpost, said that the situation was stable but under close observation to prevent any further disturbances.
The incident comes shortly after similar unrest in Noida earlier this month, where factory workers’ protests turned violent, highlighting growing concerns around labour conditions in industrial areas.
Authorities are now expected to facilitate further dialogue between the workers and the company management in an effort to reach a resolution and prevent future conflicts.
