KarnatakaPolitics – The Congress party secured a decisive victory in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections on Friday, winning all five seats it had contested. Senior leaders described the outcome as a strong indication of support for the state government’s governance model and welfare initiatives. The result has further strengthened the party’s position in Karnataka, where it currently holds power.
Leadership Credits Party Unity for Success
Following the announcement of the results, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said the party had initially not expected a competitive election. He noted that the contest took shape only after opposition parties decided to enter the race.
Shivakumar said the Congress leadership, under the guidance of party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, selected candidates who had long contributed to the organisation. According to him, the victory reflected the collective efforts of party leaders and legislators who remained united throughout the electoral process.
Support Allegedly Came From Beyond Party Lines
The senior Congress leader also suggested that the party received support extending beyond its own legislative strength in the Assembly. He claimed that legislators from different political backgrounds appeared to back the government, indicating acceptance of its policies and development agenda.
Expressing gratitude to those who voted in favour of Congress candidates, Shivakumar said the results demonstrated confidence in the government’s approach and highlighted the benefits of maintaining unity within the party.
Congress Calls Outcome a Major Electoral Achievement
Congress General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala described the result as a significant electoral success. He stated that all five Congress candidates secured comfortable victories and claimed the party received more votes than its expected strength in the legislature.
According to Surjewala, the Congress had a numerical base of 135 votes but eventually secured support from a larger number of legislators. He also pointed to a decline in vote counts for opposition parties, arguing that the results reflected changing political preferences among elected representatives.
Welfare Guarantees Highlighted as Key Factor
Surjewala said the voting pattern showed broad approval of the Congress government’s welfare commitments. He argued that legislators supported policies aimed at providing direct financial assistance and social benefits to economically weaker sections of society.
The Congress leader maintained that the election outcome represented support for what he called constructive and development-oriented politics. He said lawmakers had assessed the government’s performance and voted in favour of continuing welfare measures that target women, low-income families and other vulnerable groups.
Opposition Criticised Over Policy Differences
During his remarks, Surjewala criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular), accusing them of opposing the Congress government’s flagship guarantee schemes. He claimed that the voting results suggested a preference among legislators for continuing programmes that provide financial support to beneficiaries across Karnataka.
He further stated that substantial funds are being distributed annually through the state’s welfare initiatives and argued that these programmes have contributed to public support for the government. According to him, the Legislative Council election results reinforce confidence in policies focused on social welfare, development and economic assistance.

The outcome is expected to boost the Congress party’s confidence in Karnataka politics, where it continues to emphasise welfare-driven governance and development programmes.
