Karnataka Politics –Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s announcement that he will not contest the 2028 Assembly elections has sparked political reactions across the state, with BJP leaders interpreting the decision as a sign of changing political dynamics while Congress leaders insist he remains committed to public service.
Siddaramaiah’s decision to step away from electoral politics in the 2028 Karnataka Assembly elections has triggered a sharp exchange between the ruling and opposition camps. Soon after the veteran Congress leader made his announcement, senior BJP leader CT Ravi claimed the move reflected an understanding that the Congress party could face a difficult electoral battle in the next state elections.
BJP Questions Congress Prospects
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, CT Ravi said Siddaramaiah’s decision should be viewed in the context of his long political experience. According to Ravi, the former Chief Minister has assessed the state’s political environment and concluded that Congress may struggle in the 2028 Assembly polls.
Ravi remarked that Siddaramaiah is an experienced politician who understands electoral realities and suggested that the decision was appropriate considering his political future. He argued that the Congress would face significant challenges in the upcoming elections, adding that Siddaramaiah’s announcement aligned with that assessment.
Siddaramaiah Explains His Decision
Earlier in the day, Siddaramaiah shared his decision through a post on X, stating that he would not seek another term in the Karnataka Assembly elections scheduled for 2028. While ruling out future electoral contests, he clarified that he was not withdrawing from public life and intended to remain actively involved in political and social issues.
The veteran Congress leader said he would continue speaking for the concerns and aspirations of the people despite staying away from contesting elections. He also expressed disappointment over what he described as changes in the nature of contemporary politics, saying the political environment had become increasingly difficult.
Age, Health and Changing Political Landscape
Siddaramaiah, who is 79 years old, said his decision was influenced by advancing age and health considerations. He noted that he would be 82 by the time Karnataka goes to the Assembly polls in 2028, making it challenging to campaign with the same level of energy that he had maintained throughout his political career.
Reflecting on his journey, Siddaramaiah pointed out that his public life began in 1978 as a taluk board member and that the 2028 elections would mark nearly five decades of active political involvement. He also observed that election campaigns have changed considerably over the years, recalling that candidates once received direct financial support from people in their constituencies, a practice he believes has largely disappeared.
Varuna Supporters Requested Another Contest
The Congress veteran also revealed that many people from his Varuna Assembly constituency had encouraged him to contest once more. Despite those appeals, he said he had firmly decided against participating in future elections.
Even after stepping away from electoral politics, Siddaramaiah reiterated that he would remain committed to serving society and raising issues affecting ordinary citizens. He stressed that public service would continue to be his priority regardless of whether he holds elected office.
Congress Rejects Retirement Speculation
Congress leaders were quick to clarify that Siddaramaiah’s announcement should not be interpreted as retirement from politics. MLA Ashok Pattan said the former Chief Minister’s statement was intended to create opportunities for younger leaders within the party rather than signal a complete exit from political life.
Pattan further stated that if senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi were to ask Siddaramaiah to contest in the future, the veteran leader would be willing to reconsider. Congress MLC AC Srinivasa also expressed confidence that Siddaramaiah would continue contributing to Karnataka’s political landscape for years to come, adding that the people of the state continue to value his leadership and experience.
