Justice – Jodhpur Sisters’ Deaths Trigger Action Against Police Officials

Justice –  The deaths of two sisters in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district have intensified public anger and renewed concerns over the handling of sexual assault complaints by local authorities. The case, linked to allegations of gangrape, blackmail, and delayed police response, has now led to arrests, administrative action, and a wider investigation.

Allegations Sparked Months of Distress

The matter relates to the Kherapa area of rural Jodhpur, where the younger of the two sisters died after allegedly consuming pesticide while protesting against what she described as police negligence in the case. Her elder sister had earlier died by suicide at her matrimonial home in March this year.

According to the complaint filed in April, the sisters were allegedly subjected to sexual exploitation by several men over a prolonged period. The accused were also alleged to have recorded objectionable videos and used them to threaten and extort the victims for years.

The FIR named multiple accused, including Mahipal, Gopal, Shivraj, Vijram, Dinesh, Manoj, and Pukhraj. The younger sister stated that the harassment and intimidation continued even after the case was formally registered.

Claims of Threats and Blackmail

In her statement to police, the younger sister alleged that one of the accused first gained the trust of her elder sister and later used private videos to blackmail her. She claimed the accused and their associates repeatedly threatened both sisters and pressured them to remain silent.

The complaint further mentioned that the victims were allegedly warned of severe consequences if they pursued legal action. Family members have claimed the continuous harassment and lack of immediate police intervention pushed the sisters into extreme distress.

Authorities confirmed that despite the FIR being lodged, arrests had not been made for several weeks, leading to growing frustration among the victims and their relatives.

Protest at Water Tank Ended in Tragedy

On Friday, the younger sister climbed a village water tank to protest the alleged inaction of authorities and demand immediate arrests in the case. Villagers alerted officials after noticing her atop the structure.

Police personnel and local administration officers reached the location and attempted to persuade her to come down safely. During the rescue efforts, she allegedly consumed pesticide. She was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later referred to a hospital in Jodhpur, but she died on the way.

Her death led to widespread anger in the region, with villagers and family members gathering outside the mortuary to demand justice and strict action against officials accused of negligence.

Administrative Action Taken

As protests intensified, the district administration initiated action against several police personnel. The local police outpost in-charge was removed from active field duty and sent to police lines.

A departmental inquiry has also been recommended against the Kherapa Station House Officer and the Bhopalgarh Circle Officer over alleged lapses in supervision and handling of the complaint.

The post-mortem examination was completed late Saturday after discussions between the administration and protesters. The body was later handed over to the family for final rites.

Arrests Made, Investigation Expanded

Police officials stated that two key accused, identified as Mahipal and Gopal, have been arrested in connection with the case. Investigators are also questioning several other suspects named in the complaint.

Rural Superintendent of Police P.D. Nitya said statements from the victims’ family members are being recorded and both deaths will now be examined as part of the broader criminal investigation already underway.

The case has been transferred to Additional SP Raghunath Garg for further investigation. Senior officials have also recommended disciplinary proceedings against officers allegedly responsible for delays in the initial inquiry.

Public Outrage Across Rajasthan

The incident has triggered strong reactions across Rajasthan, with social groups and local organizations raising concerns over the treatment of sexual assault complaints and the pace of police action in sensitive cases.

Community leaders participating in the protests alleged that timely intervention by authorities could have prevented the deaths. The incident has once again placed the spotlight on accountability within law enforcement agencies and the need for faster response mechanisms in crimes involving women.
