Judiciary – Supreme Court Seeks Swift Decision on Action Against MP Minister
Judiciary – The Supreme Court on Friday expressed strong displeasure over the delay by the Madhya Pradesh government in deciding whether to grant permission for prosecution against state minister Kunwar Vijay Shah over his controversial remarks aimed at Colonel Sofiya Qureshi following Operation Sindoor.
The court made it clear that enough time had already been given to the state administration and directed authorities to take a final decision within the next four weeks. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, stressed that earlier instructions issued by the court must be followed without further delay.
Court Questions Delay in State Action
The matter came up after the state government failed to act despite an earlier order passed on January 19. At that time, the Supreme Court had instructed the Madhya Pradesh administration to decide within two weeks whether sanction for prosecution should be granted in the case.
During Friday’s hearing, the bench sharply reminded the government about its pending responsibility. The judges stated that court directions cannot remain unimplemented indefinitely and insisted on immediate compliance.
The remarks from the bench reflected growing concern over the lack of progress despite the seriousness of the controversy surrounding the minister’s statement.
Solicitor General Refers to Minister’s Apology
Appearing on behalf of the Madhya Pradesh government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the court that Vijay Shah had already expressed regret over the remarks and described the comments as unfortunate.
However, the bench questioned the timing and intent behind the apology. Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that if the statement had genuinely been accidental or a simple slip of the tongue, the apology should have been issued immediately rather than after judicial intervention.
The court noted that the minister’s expression of regret appeared to come only after the matter drew legal scrutiny. The observation indicated the bench was not fully convinced that the apology alone could close the issue.
Remarks Triggered Widespread Criticism
Kunwar Vijay Shah had faced intense criticism after referring to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists,” a statement that sparked outrage across political and public circles.
Colonel Qureshi had gained national attention for briefing the media regarding Operation Sindoor, an important military-related operation connected to Pakistan. Her role in communicating official information had been widely acknowledged at the time.
The minister’s comments were viewed by many as offensive and inappropriate, particularly because they targeted a serving military officer associated with a sensitive national security matter.
Supreme Court Emphasises Responsibility of Public Figures
The hearing also highlighted the judiciary’s broader concern regarding statements made by individuals holding constitutional or ministerial positions. The court’s observations suggested that elected representatives are expected to maintain restraint and responsibility while speaking publicly, especially on issues connected to national institutions and armed forces personnel.
Legal experts believe the case could become significant in defining how quickly governments must respond when controversial remarks by public officials attract judicial attention.
The Supreme Court’s latest order now places clear pressure on the Madhya Pradesh government to complete the pending process within the timeframe fixed by the bench.
