Jharkhand lady: A 22-year-old lady from a secluded hamlet in the Hazaribag region of Jharkhand named Ranjana Kumari has overcome years of financial difficulties and the pain of her father’s death to fulfill her ambition of joining the Border Security Force (BSF).

After completing a year-long training at the BSF training center in Siliguri, West Bengal, Ranjana was chosen as a BSF General Duty (GD) constable in 2024 and is now awaiting her assignment in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, which is near the Pakistani border.
Ranjana, a Class 2 student and resident of Amanari village in the Tatijharia block, was only eight years old in January 2013 when her father, Manoj Kumar Kushwaha, was discovered dead in a city hotel.
Ranjana was reared by her mother, Nutan Devi, an anganwadi worker who made around Rs 4,000 per month, all by herself. My father was killed while working as a manager at a city hotel. At that point, everything became black for us, but my mother put forth a lot of effort to provide for the family,” Ranjana told PTI.
She started tutoring around 40 pupils up to Class 10 in order to further her education, which enabled her to finish her intermediate and graduate coursework.
She is now enrolled in Teklal Mahato Degree College in Vishnugarh, Hazaribag, where she is working for an Honors degree in History. My goals were not going to be derailed by the death of my father. “I’ve always wanted to wear the BSF uniform,” she said, adding that passing the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) GD test allowed her to realize her ambition.
According to Ranjana, she has already begun studying for the tests required for promotions in the BSF.
“If I can do it coming from a small village without a father, others can also realize their dreams through hard work and determination,” she added, encouraging other girls going through difficult times to never give up.
