Jammu Kashmir – Omar Abdullah Weighs Cabinet Expansion as Key Visits Near

Jammu Kashmir –  JJammu Kashmir -b ammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is considering an expansion of his Council of Ministers, with a decision expected either before or after the proposed Delhi protest seeking restoration of statehood. The development comes as the National Conference-led government prepares to complete nearly two years in office after taking charge in October 2024.

Three Cabinet Positions Remain Unfilled

The present ministry has six members, including the chief minister, leaving three vacancies in the cabinet. Several National Conference legislators are understood to be seeking ministerial responsibilities, while independent MLAs supporting the government are also pressing their claims.

Sources familiar with the matter said Abdullah may use the opportunity to make wider changes to his team rather than limit the exercise to filling vacant posts. A reshuffle is being considered alongside the expansion, and some existing ministers could be replaced if the plan goes ahead.

The chief minister also faces a sensitive decision involving the Congress, an ally that has six MLAs in the Assembly. The party has so far stayed out of the ministry, maintaining that it will not join the cabinet until Jammu and Kashmir regains statehood. Any cabinet exercise will therefore require careful coordination between the alliance partners.

BJP President Nitin Nabin to Visit Jammu

BJP national president Nitin Nabin is scheduled to arrive in Jammu on July 6 for a two-day visit, marking his first trip to the Union Territory since becoming party president in January.

During the visit, Nabin is expected to meet party leaders, interact with workers and attend organisational review meetings. The BJP leadership plans to assess its local structure and discuss steps to expand the party’s outreach across Jammu and Kashmir.

A public gathering in Jammu is also likely on July 6 in connection with the birth anniversary of Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Party sources indicated that the programme is expected to focus mainly on Jammu, with no visit to Kashmir currently planned.

The visit comes at a time when the BJP is working to strengthen its organisational presence in the Union Territory and prepare its workers for future political activity. Senior leaders are likely to brief the party president on local issues, regional priorities and the party’s ongoing campaigns.

PM CARES Support for Diagnostic Facilities

Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive additional medical diagnostic equipment under the PM CARES Fund, aimed at improving services in government-run health institutions.

The Union Territory has been allotted 275 artificial intelligence-enabled portable handheld X-ray machines, nine MRI units with 1.5 Tesla capacity and four digital mammography units. The equipment is expected to support faster diagnosis in hospitals and healthcare centres, particularly in areas where advanced facilities are limited.

An agreement has been signed between the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Jammu and Kashmir government to implement the project. The Centre will handle procurement and installation of the equipment.

Officials said the new machines will help strengthen diagnostic care, improve breast cancer screening and assist tuberculosis detection through AI-supported systems. The portable X-ray devices are expected to be especially useful in improving access to diagnostic services in remote and underserved locations.

The health infrastructure initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public healthcare capacity in Jammu and Kashmir. Once installed, the equipment is expected to support doctors and medical staff in identifying illnesses earlier and providing timely treatment to patients.
