InvestmentFraud – Pudukkottai Fraud Case Sparks Anger Among Depositors
InvestmentFraud – A tense atmosphere gripped parts of Pudukkottai after police arrested a local political functionary accused of collecting crores of rupees from residents by allegedly promising unusually high financial returns.

The accused, identified as Saravanan from the Thiruvappur locality in Pudukkottai, is associated with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and reportedly holds a position in the party’s central district executive committee. According to investigators, he was taken into custody by the District Crime Branch following multiple complaints linked to a large-scale financial fraud case.
Allegations of Large-Scale Financial Collection
Police officials said the suspect had allegedly raised money from businessmen, private financiers, and other individuals in and around Pudukkottai over several years. Authorities believe investors were persuaded to hand over substantial amounts after being assured of attractive interest payments and profitable returns.
Investigators stated that individual contributions reportedly ranged between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 1.5 crore. In certain instances, the accused is also alleged to have cited family-related emergencies, including medical concerns involving his mother, while seeking financial assistance from people known to him.
Preliminary findings suggest the total amount collected may have crossed Rs 25 crore. Complainants have alleged that repayments stopped and repeated efforts to recover their money were unsuccessful.
Victims Report Communication Breakdown
Several affected investors informed police that they had been unable to reach Saravanan over the past two weeks. His mobile phone was reportedly switched off, leading to growing concern among those who had invested money through him.
As anxiety increased, a number of individuals approached the Pudukkottai District Superintendent of Police and submitted formal complaints. Sources said many complainants feared the accused could attempt to avoid repayment amid the changing political environment in Tamil Nadu.
Following the complaints, the District Crime Branch initiated an inquiry and launched efforts to trace the accused. Police later located and arrested him in another state before bringing him back to Pudukkottai for questioning.
Crowd Gathers Outside Police Office
News of the arrest quickly spread across the district, prompting a large group of affected individuals to gather near the office of the Superintendent of Police. Officials estimated that more than 100 people assembled at the premises seeking immediate action in the case.
Witnesses said emotions ran high as several investors expressed frustration over the alleged loss of their savings. Some members of the crowd reportedly demanded direct access to the accused, insisting they wanted to confront him personally over the financial losses they suffered.
Police personnel increased security arrangements in and around the office to prevent any untoward incident. Senior officials later intervened and appealed to the gathering to remain calm.
Police Assure Legal Action and Recovery Efforts
Authorities informed the complainants that a formal case had already been registered against Saravanan and assured them that legal procedures would be followed strictly. Officials also confirmed that the accused would be produced before a court and that investigators planned to seek custody for further questioning.
Police said the investigation would focus on tracing the flow of funds, identifying possible assets, and examining whether additional individuals were connected to the alleged fraud. Efforts are also expected to be made to recover money and facilitate repayment to victims wherever possible.
Despite the assurances, tension continued in the area as several affected persons remained within the police office premises seeking updates on the progress of the case. Officials maintained close monitoring of the situation to ensure law and order remained under control.
