Early Morning Searches at Key Locations

According to officials familiar with the operation, teams from the department initiated simultaneous searches at around 6 am. The action covered Kumar’s residence on Manoharpukur Road as well as his election office in the area. Authorities have not yet publicly clarified the specific grounds for conducting these searches, and details of what was recovered remain undisclosed.

The timing of the action has drawn attention, coming just weeks before voting is scheduled in the constituency. Election activities in the region are already in full swing, with candidates intensifying their campaigns.

Link to Ongoing Enforcement Directorate Inquiry

The searches follow recent developments involving the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has been examining a land-related fraud case. Kumar had been called in multiple times earlier this month in connection with the investigation. He appeared before the agency at its Salt Lake office on April 1, April 3, and April 9.

Officials indicated that investigators are looking into possible financial links between Kumar and businessman Amit Gangopadhyay. Properties connected to Gangopadhyay were also searched recently as part of the same probe. While no formal conclusions have been announced, the inquiry appears to be focused on tracking financial transactions and possible irregularities.

Political Context Ahead of Elections

The Rashbehari Assembly seat is set to go to polls on April 29, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The constituency is expected to witness a closely watched contest. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated Swapan Dasgupta, a well-known political commentator, as its candidate.

With the election approaching, the searches have added a fresh layer of political tension. Observers note that such developments often become part of the broader political narrative during campaign periods, though agencies maintain that their actions are based on evidence and procedure.

Tension Outside Residence, Security Deployed

Following the searches, a crowd gathered outside Kumar’s residence, leading to a tense situation in the area. Supporters of the Trinamool Congress raised slogans, alleging political motives behind the action and criticizing the central government.

To prevent any escalation, security personnel, including central forces, were deployed at the site. Officials worked to maintain order and ensure that the operation could proceed without disruption.

Awaiting Official Clarification

As of now, neither the Income Tax Department nor Kumar has issued a detailed statement regarding the outcome of the searches. It remains unclear whether any documents, cash, or digital records have been seized during the operation.

The situation is expected to develop further in the coming days as agencies continue their inquiries and political campaigning intensifies in the lead-up to polling.
