Investigation – FBI Expands Charges in New Jersey Mother and Son Murder Case
Investigation – The Federal Bureau of Investigation has formally announced charges against an Indian national accused in the 2017 killings of a woman and her young son in the US state of New Jersey. Authorities allege the suspect fled to India shortly after the crime and has remained outside American jurisdiction since then.
FBI Announces Fresh Developments in Long-Running Investigation
The accused, identified as 38-year-old Nazeer Hameed, is now facing multiple criminal charges, including first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Investigators believe he is currently residing in India.
According to officials, Hameed previously worked with the husband of the deceased woman and also lived in the same apartment complex as the family in Maple Shade, New Jersey. Authorities say the incident took place on March 23, 2017, inside the victims’ residence.
The victims were identified as 38-year-old Sasikala Narra and her six-year-old son, Anish Narra. Law enforcement agencies stated that the case has remained active for years as investigators continued efforts to locate the suspect.
Authorities Detail Allegations Against Suspect
Investigators claim Hameed had allegedly been monitoring and stalking Hanumanth Narra, the husband of Sasikala Narra, before the killings occurred. Officials have not publicly disclosed a confirmed motive, but court filings and investigative records indicate the suspect was known to the family.
Autopsy findings revealed that both victims died from severe slash injuries to the neck. Authorities stated that the child suffered extremely critical wounds, while post-mortem examinations also documented defensive injuries on both victims, indicating signs of resistance during the attack.
The Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, together with Maple Shade Police and FBI Newark, formally filed two counts of first-degree murder against Hameed. Prosecutors additionally charged him with two counts related to unlawful possession of a weapon.
FBI Offers Reward in Search for Accused
Federal investigators said the suspect allegedly escaped to India following the killings. Because of his departure from the United States, authorities added a federal charge related to unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
In a public statement, FBI Newark announced a reward of up to $50,000 for information that could help authorities locate and arrest Hameed. Officials also warned that the accused should be considered armed and dangerous.
The bureau has continued to coordinate with multiple law enforcement agencies as part of efforts to secure the suspect’s return to the United States to face trial.
Extradition Efforts Involve US and Indian Authorities
The case has also drawn attention at the governmental level. Last year, former New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy reportedly contacted Indian Ambassador Vinay Kwatra to seek cooperation from the Indian government regarding extradition proceedings.
In his communication, Murphy described the killings as a deeply disturbing crime that shocked communities across New Jersey. He also expressed the state’s willingness to work closely with India’s Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs, along with US federal agencies including the Justice Department, State Department, and FBI.
The governor further noted that any extradition process would be carried out in accordance with existing legal procedures and the bilateral treaty between India and the United States.
Murphy also thanked Indian officials for their attention to the matter and emphasized continued cooperation between both governments on the investigation.
