Investigation – Delhi Court Grants NIA Custody in Hadi Murder Case
Investigation – A Delhi court has handed over two Bangladeshi nationals accused in the killing of political activist Osman Hadi to the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for 11 days. The case, which stems from a high-profile daylight shooting in Dhaka, has drawn attention due to its alleged cross-border links and its connection to unrest in Bangladesh.
Arrest and Transfer to Delhi
The accused, identified as Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Rahul, aged 37, and Alamgir Hossain, aged 34, were apprehended earlier this month by the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF). Officials confirmed that the arrests took place during the night of March 7–8 in Bongaon, located in the North 24 Parganas district near the India-Bangladesh border.
Following their arrest, the two men were initially held in West Bengal before being transferred to Delhi. The NIA secured a transit remand on March 23, allowing the agency to bring them to the capital for further investigation. They were presented before a Delhi court the next day.
Court Grants Custodial Interrogation
During the hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Rahul Tyagi argued that extended custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the broader conspiracy behind the killing. He emphasized the need to examine possible links, motives, and any network that may have facilitated the crime.
Accepting the request, Additional Sessions Judge Prashant Sharma authorized 11 days of NIA custody. The court noted that a thorough investigation at this stage was essential, particularly given the international dimensions of the case.
Allegations of Illegal Entry into India
According to earlier statements by the STF, both suspects had a history of involvement in serious criminal activities in Bangladesh, including extortion and violent offenses. Investigators believe the duo entered India unlawfully through the Meghalaya border.
Authorities further stated that the men were intercepted while attempting to return to Bangladesh via Bongaon. Their movement raised suspicions, eventually leading to their arrest.
Background of Osman Hadi’s Killing
Osman Hadi, known as a student leader and spokesperson for the political group Inquilab Mancha in Bangladesh, was shot on December 12, 2025, in Dhaka. The attack occurred in broad daylight and reportedly triggered widespread tension and unrest in parts of the country.
Following the shooting, Hadi was transported to Singapore for advanced medical treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025.
Ongoing Probe into Wider Conspiracy
Investigators are now focusing on piecing together the full scope of the conspiracy. Officials are examining whether the accused acted independently or were part of a larger organized network operating across borders.
The NIA is expected to use the custody period to interrogate the suspects, verify their movements, and establish links to other individuals or groups who may have played a role in planning or executing the crime.
Given the international implications and the political sensitivity surrounding the case, authorities are proceeding with caution while coordinating with relevant agencies.
