Housing – The early hours of Sunday saw a disturbing incident in Maharashtra’s Thane district, where part of a ceiling structure gave way inside a residential chawl, leaving a man and a young child injured.

Incident Reported in Mumbra Area

The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 am in a ground-floor room of Tambewadi Chawl, located along the Mumbra bypass road. According to officials from the civic disaster management cell, a section of plaster from the ceiling suddenly broke off. At the same time, a ceiling fan installed in the room also came crashing down, striking two occupants.

The sudden collapse caused panic among residents, many of whom were asleep when the incident took place. Neighbours quickly rushed to help and alerted local authorities.

Injuries and Immediate Medical Response

The injured individuals were identified as Asif Khan, aged 32, and three-year-old Asma Khan. Reports indicate that Asif Khan sustained a head injury due to the falling debris, while the child suffered injuries to her legs.

Emergency services responded promptly, and both victims were transported without delay to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa. Medical staff attended to their injuries, and their condition is currently under observation. No further complications have been reported so far.

Authorities Begin Investigation

Following the incident, a team from the disaster management cell, along with personnel from the local fire department, arrived at the location. The team cleared the fallen debris to ensure safety for other residents and to prevent further risk.

Officials have initiated a detailed inspection of the chawl’s structural condition. Preliminary observations suggest that the building may have underlying maintenance issues, although a full assessment is still underway.

Concerns Over Structural Safety

Incidents of this nature have raised concerns about the safety of older residential buildings in densely populated areas like Mumbra. Many chawls in the region are decades old and may not have undergone regular maintenance or structural audits.
