Heatwave – Delhi-NCR Braces for Rising Temperatures and Poor Air Quality

Heatwave –   The national capital region is witnessing a sharp increase in temperatures, with forecasts indicating further escalation in the coming days.

Delhi ncr heatwave air quality alert

The heat has started tightening its grip over Delhi-NCR, as daytime temperatures have already crossed the 40 degrees Celsius mark. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned that the situation may worsen, issuing a yellow alert for heatwave conditions over the next two days. Residents have been advised to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions as the region heads into an intense spell of summer.

Temperature Expected to Rise Further This Week

According to IMD projections, maximum temperatures in the region are likely to remain around 41 degrees Celsius on April 20 and 21, while minimum temperatures may hover near 21 degrees Celsius. Weather conditions are expected to remain stable, with clear skies and no immediate signs of rainfall or disturbance.

However, from April 22 onward, a noticeable spike in temperatures is anticipated. The mercury could touch 42 degrees Celsius during the day, with night temperatures also increasing slightly to around 22 degrees Celsius. The heatwave is expected to persist consistently throughout the day, affecting mornings, afternoons, and evenings alike.

Prolonged Heatwave Conditions Likely

The IMD has indicated that the intense heat will likely continue beyond April 22. On April 23 and 24, maximum temperatures are expected to remain close to 42 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures may rise further to approximately 23 degrees Celsius. Such sustained high temperatures can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Authorities have urged residents to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight are among the key precautions being recommended.

Humidity to Add to Discomfort

In addition to rising temperatures, humidity levels are also expected to climb, making conditions even more uncomfortable. By April 24, humidity could reach as high as 70 percent. This combination of heat and moisture in the air is likely to create sultry conditions, increasing discomfort for people across the region.

Such weather can also lead to fatigue and dehydration more quickly, especially for those who spend extended time outdoors. Health experts emphasize the importance of maintaining fluid intake and taking regular breaks from the heat.

Air Quality Shows Signs of Deterioration

Alongside the heat, air quality across Delhi-NCR has shown a decline. Data from monitoring agencies indicates that several areas have moved from the moderate category into the poor range on the Air Quality Index (AQI) scale.

In parts of Delhi, AQI readings have reached concerning levels. Anand Vihar recorded an AQI of 282, while Ashok Vihar and Bawana reported levels of 226 and 218 respectively, all falling within the poor category. Aya Nagar, however, remained in the moderate range with an AQI of 169.

Noida has also reported elevated AQI levels, with Sector 1 at 233 and Sector 116 at 209. Other areas such as Sector 125 and Sector 62 recorded readings of 185 and 182, indicating declining air quality.

Ghaziabad Faces More Severe Pollution Levels

The situation appears more critical in Ghaziabad, where some areas have entered the very poor category. Loni recorded an AQI of 321, while Ved Vihar-Loni registered 317. Other localities such as Govindpuram and Vasundhara also showed high pollution levels, with AQI readings of 257 and 234 respectively.

Experts believe that rising temperatures combined with low wind speeds are contributing to the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere. This makes it difficult for contaminants to disperse, worsening air quality conditions.

Advisory Issued for Public Safety

Health officials have advised children, elderly individuals, and those with respiratory issues to exercise extra caution during this period. The combination of extreme heat and poor air quality poses a dual challenge, increasing health risks for sensitive groups.

With the forecast indicating continued harsh weather, authorities are urging residents to stay updated with official advisories and adopt preventive measures. The coming days are expected to test resilience across Delhi-NCR as both heat and pollution levels remain elevated.
