Heatwave – Residents across Delhi endured another day of oppressive heat on Wednesday as temperatures climbed beyond 45 degrees Celsius in several areas of the capital. The intense summer conditions pushed many parts of the city into severe heat territory, while weather officials indicated that a change could arrive soon with thunderstorms and light rainfall expected on Thursday.

Temperatures Rise Sharply Across the Capital

Data released by the India Meteorological Department showed that Safdarjung, considered Delhi’s primary weather monitoring centre, recorded a maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius. This reading was nearly four degrees above the seasonal average, reflecting the unusually harsh conditions affecting the city.

Several other weather stations registered even higher temperatures during the day. Ridge reported 45.6 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest locations in the national capital region. Ayanagar followed closely with 45.4 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road and Palam both touched 44.6 degrees Celsius. The widespread rise in temperatures indicated that heatwave-like conditions had spread across most parts of Delhi.

The intense heat also affected daily movement in the city, with roads appearing less crowded during peak afternoon hours as people attempted to avoid direct exposure to the sun.

Minimum Temperatures Remain Relatively Stable

While daytime temperatures remained extremely high, night temperatures were comparatively lower. Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 26.2 degrees Celsius, which remained slightly below the normal seasonal level.

Among other stations, Palam registered a low of 27.6 degrees Celsius, Ridge recorded 27.5 degrees Celsius, and Ayanagar reported 26.7 degrees Celsius. Lodhi Road remained relatively cooler with a minimum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists noted that although mornings and nights offered limited relief, the combination of dry winds and strong sunlight continued to increase discomfort levels during the daytime.

IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Thursday

The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Thursday, warning residents about possible thunderstorms and light rain activity in several parts of Delhi. Officials stated that changing weather conditions may help reduce the severity of the ongoing heat.

According to the forecast, the maximum temperature on Thursday is expected to remain around 43 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle close to 28 degrees Celsius.

Weather experts explained that the expected shift is linked to the influence of a western disturbance moving towards northwestern India. In addition, moisture entering from the Bay of Bengal and the likely formation of a lower-level east-west trough are expected to support cloud formation and rainfall activity.

These developments are likely to weaken the prevailing heatwave conditions over the coming days and provide temporary relief to residents struggling with the prolonged hot spell.

Air Quality Stays in Moderate Category

Despite the intense weather, Delhi’s air quality remained in the “moderate” category on Wednesday. Environmental monitoring agencies stated that pollution levels did not show any major spike during the day, although hot and dry conditions continued to impact overall comfort levels across the city.

Health experts have advised people to remain cautious during extreme temperatures by staying hydrated, avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure during afternoon hours, and taking preventive measures against heat-related illnesses.
