Healthcare – Surprise Inspection at Ujjain District Hospital Reveals Staff Absences
Healthcare – A surprise inspection conducted at the district hospital in Ujjain has led to disciplinary action against several doctors and staff members who were found absent during working hours. District Collector Roshan Kumar Singh visited the government-run medical facility on Thursday to evaluate the functioning of healthcare services, infrastructure conditions, and patient care systems.
During the unannounced inspection, the district administration discovered that multiple healthcare personnel were not present at their assigned duties. Following the findings, the district collector ordered the deduction of one day’s salary for the absent employees and issued show-cause notices seeking explanations for their absence.
Action Taken Against Absent Medical Staff
Speaking to journalists after the inspection, District Collector Roshan Kumar Singh said the visit was carried out in line with the state government’s focus on strengthening governance and improving public services. He explained that disciplinary action had been initiated after several medical staff members failed to report for duty during the inspection.
According to the collector, salary deductions have been ordered for those found absent, while official notices have been issued asking them to explain the reasons for their absence. The administration will review the responses before deciding on further action if required.
Officials indicated that such inspections are intended to reinforce accountability in government hospitals and ensure that essential medical services remain available to patients at all times.
Directions Issued to Improve Hospital Services
Apart from taking action against absentee staff, the district administration also reviewed operational issues within the hospital. Instructions were issued to address gaps in service delivery so that patients can receive treatment and medicines without delays.
The collector emphasized that hospitals must maintain efficient systems to support patients visiting the facility for medical care. Administrative officials were directed to ensure that infrastructure and service management issues are addressed promptly.
Authorities also examined the progress of ongoing infrastructure improvements inside the hospital complex.
Lift Repair and Infrastructure Upgrades Underway
One of the long-standing concerns raised during the inspection involved the hospital’s lift system, which has been under repair for some time. Officials informed the district collector that repair and installation work is currently in progress.
According to the administration, two additional lifts are expected to become operational within the current week. The remaining lifts across the hospital complex are expected to be fully functional within the next one to one-and-a-half months.
The district collector noted that restoring the lifts is important to ensure smooth movement of patients, medical staff, and equipment within the hospital building, particularly for critically ill patients and elderly visitors.
State Government Emphasizes Strengthening Healthcare System
Earlier this year, the Madhya Pradesh government highlighted ongoing efforts to improve healthcare services across the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav had stated in February that continuous steps are being taken to expand health infrastructure and enhance medical facilities for citizens.
According to an official statement, the state has been investing in the development of hospitals, medical education institutions, and specialised treatment services. These efforts aim to provide modern and accessible healthcare facilities to the general public.
Authorities say that improvements in medical training, expansion of super-speciality treatment units, and strengthening of public health programmes have contributed to gradual progress in healthcare outcomes.
Improvements Reported in Maternal and Child Health Indicators
Government data indicates progress in key health indicators related to maternal and child welfare in Madhya Pradesh. The Maternal Mortality Rate has declined from 173 to 142, while the Infant Mortality Rate has reduced from 41 to 37.
Several government schemes have supported these improvements. Financial assistance provided through the Janani Suraksha Yojana and the Chief Minister’s Maternity Assistance Scheme has benefited a large number of families.
Healthcare facilities such as Special Newborn Care Units and Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres have also reported higher recovery and discharge rates. Officials say these centres play an important role in treating newborn complications and addressing child malnutrition.
Public Health Programmes and Medical Support Schemes
Public health initiatives have also shown progress across the state. Madhya Pradesh has been ranked among the top five states in the national Tuberculosis Elimination Programme.
Screening and treatment services are also being expanded under the Sickle Cell Mission to improve early diagnosis and medical support for affected individuals.
Under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance programme, more than 4.43 crore health cards have been issued in the state. The scheme allows eligible families to receive free medical treatment worth up to ₹5 lakh annually at approved hospitals.
In addition, critically ill patients in emergency situations can access rapid transport to advanced medical facilities through the PM Shri Air Ambulance Service. According to official figures, more than 120 patients have benefited from this emergency service so far.
