HandloomAwards – Andhra Pradesh’s handloom community may soon receive greater recognition under a proposal aimed at celebrating the contribution of traditional artisans and preserving the state’s rich weaving culture.
Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav has urged Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to introduce a dedicated State-level Handloom Awards programme in Andhra Pradesh. The proposal seeks to honour weavers, designers and artisans whose work has helped sustain the state’s centuries-old handloom traditions and cultural identity.
Proposal Focuses on Preserving Traditional Craftsmanship
In his appeal to the Chief Minister, the minister highlighted the significant role played by the handloom sector in shaping Andhra Pradesh’s cultural and artistic heritage. He described traditional weaving as an enduring symbol of creativity, craftsmanship and community knowledge passed down through generations.
According to Yadav, thousands of artisans across the state continue to protect and promote these traditional skills despite changing market conditions and growing competition from machine-made products. Recognising their efforts through a formal awards programme, he said, would encourage future generations to remain connected to the craft.
Renowned Weaving Centres Continue to Uphold Legacy
The minister pointed to several well-known handloom clusters that have earned recognition for their distinctive weaving styles and products. Centres such as Dharmavaram, Uppada, Mangalagiri, Chirala, Pedana, Ponduru, Srikalahasti, Bobbili, Bhattiprolu and Madanapalle have long been associated with Andhra Pradesh’s rich textile heritage.
These weaving hubs continue to support local livelihoods while preserving techniques that have been refined over decades. Their contribution, Yadav noted, has helped maintain the state’s reputation as an important destination for traditional handloom production.
State Awards Could Complement National Recognition
The minister observed that the Government of India already acknowledges exceptional achievements in the handloom sector through the National Handloom Awards. However, he noted that several states across the country have established their own recognition programmes to honour local talent and encourage excellence within regional weaving communities.
Introducing a similar initiative in Andhra Pradesh, he said, would create additional opportunities for artisans to gain recognition for their work and innovation. Such honours could also motivate younger craftsmen to pursue traditional weaving as a viable profession.
Suggestion to Present Awards on National Handloom Day
As part of the proposal, Yadav recommended that the awards be presented annually on National Handloom Day, observed on August 7. Holding the ceremony on this occasion would align the state’s recognition programme with national efforts to promote awareness of India’s handloom sector.
The proposed awards would be open to deserving weavers, designers and artisans from different regions of Andhra Pradesh. Besides celebrating excellence, the initiative could improve recipients’ chances of being considered for national honours and various government welfare programmes linked to the handloom industry.
Awaiting Government Consideration
The minister has requested the Chief Minister to examine the proposal and take an appropriate decision regarding its implementation. If approved, the initiative could become an important step toward recognising the dedication of Andhra Pradesh’s weaving community while strengthening efforts to preserve one of the state’s most valued traditional industries.
