Governance – BJP Secures Second Mayoral Victory in Delhi Civic Body

Governance –  The Bharatiya Janata Party has once again taken control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, with its candidate winning the mayoral election and consolidating its position in the city’s local governance structure.

Delhi civic body bjp win

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) witnessed a decisive outcome on Wednesday as BJP councillor Pravesh Wahi emerged victorious in the mayoral election. Representing Rohini East, Wahi secured 156 votes, comfortably crossing the required majority mark. His win was supported not only by his party members but also by 14 councillors belonging to the Indraprastha Vikas Party. In comparison, Congress nominee Hazi Zaraf managed to gather nine votes in the electoral contest.

Deputy Mayor Election Outcome

Alongside the mayoral polls, the deputy mayor position also went in favor of the BJP. Monika Pant, a councillor from Anand Vihar, was elected unopposed after receiving 156 votes. Her victory further strengthened the party’s hold over key administrative positions within the civic body.

Composition of the Standing Committee

The election process also determined the composition of the influential Standing Committee, which plays a crucial role in financial and policy decisions. BJP candidates Jai Bhagwan Yadav from Begumpur and Manish Chadha from Paharganj secured seats on the panel. Additionally, AAP councillor Jalaj Chaudhary from Shalimar Bagh was elected as a member, ensuring representation from multiple political groups in the committee.

Background of the New Mayor

Pravesh Wahi’s political journey reflects a long-standing association with grassroots and ideological organizations. Coming from a Khatri Punjabi family with roots in Rawalpindi, his early life was shaped in Delhi. He began his education at a primary school run by the municipal corporation in Old Delhi. From a young age, he became associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which played a role in shaping his political outlook.

Political Career and Experience

Wahi entered electoral politics in 2007 when he was first elected as a councillor from Rohini. He later represented Naharpur and served another term between 2012 and 2017. Over the years, he held several administrative responsibilities, including serving as chairman of the Rohini Zonal Committee from 2010 to 2012. He also headed the Standing Committee of the erstwhile North Corporation between 2016 and 2017, gaining experience in handling civic governance and budgetary matters.

Before formally joining electoral politics, Wahi had been active in organizational roles. He worked as an area representative for the Vishva Hindu Parishad in 1990 and later rose to the position of district president in 1998. His involvement with the Bharatiya Janata Party deepened in 2002 when he joined its youth wing, taking on various responsibilities that eventually led to his rise within the party structure.

Electoral Process and Voting Structure

The mayoral election involved a broad electoral college comprising 273 members. This included 249 elected councillors, 14 MLAs nominated by the Delhi Assembly, seven Members of Parliament from the Lok Sabha, and three Rajya Sabha representatives from Delhi. To secure victory, a candidate needed at least 137 votes. Wahi’s tally of 156 votes ensured a clear and decisive mandate.

Significance of the Result

The outcome reflects the BJP’s continued influence in Delhi’s municipal governance. With both the mayor and deputy mayor positions secured, along with significant representation in the Standing Committee, the party is positioned to play a central role in shaping civic policies and administrative decisions in the capital.

At the same time, the inclusion of members from other political parties in the Standing Committee indicates a degree of plural representation, which may influence deliberations on key civic issues in the coming months.
