GlobalSouth – Modi Calls for Stronger Safety Nets Against Global Economic Disruptions
GlobalSouth – Finance and development support for emerging economies took center stage at the G7 Summit on Wednesday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on international financial institutions to strengthen assistance frameworks for countries across the Global South facing growing pressure from geopolitical conflicts and supply chain disruptions.
Addressing an outreach session attended by partner nations and G7 leaders in France, Modi highlighted the economic challenges created by ongoing tensions in West Asia. He cautioned that disturbances affecting the movement of fuel, fertilisers, and food commodities could create lasting difficulties for developing countries that already face significant financial vulnerabilities.
Impact of Global Conflicts on Developing Nations
During his remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized that nations with limited economic resources often suffer the most when international crises disrupt trade and essential supplies. He noted that recent geopolitical developments have exposed weaknesses in global systems that many developing economies depend upon for critical imports.
According to Modi, interruptions in important transportation and trade routes have generated concerns over energy security, food availability, and agricultural inputs. He stressed that countries with fewer resources should not be left to manage the consequences of global instability without adequate international support.
The Prime Minister urged global institutions to respond more effectively to external economic shocks, arguing that financial mechanisms must evolve to address the unique challenges confronting emerging economies.
Proposal for Expanded Connectivity Initiatives
A major focus of Modi’s address was the need to create broader and more inclusive infrastructure partnerships. Referring to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), he suggested that similar connectivity projects could be developed in other regions of the world.
He proposed extending the concept to countries across Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands, where enhanced transportation networks and trade corridors could contribute to economic growth and regional integration.
The Prime Minister said stronger infrastructure links would help improve market access, encourage investment, and reduce barriers to trade, particularly for developing nations seeking greater participation in the global economy.
New Framework for Trade and Infrastructure Development
To support this vision, Modi introduced the idea of an International Mobilisation Partnership for Accelerating Connectivity and Trade, or IMPACT. The proposed initiative would bring together financial resources from G7 nations, technical expertise and skilled talent from India, and active participation from countries in the Global South.
He described the framework as a potential platform for accelerating infrastructure projects and strengthening commercial relationships among emerging economies. The concept aims to encourage collaborative development while ensuring that participating countries maintain ownership and leadership of projects within their regions.
Focus on Skills and Workforce Mobility
Modi also addressed the changing demographic landscape across the world. He pointed out that many advanced economies are experiencing ageing populations, while India and several developing nations possess large pools of young workers, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals.
To bridge this gap, he advocated the creation of a Global Skills Partnership that would facilitate better identification of workforce capabilities and support trusted international mobility for skilled workers.
The Prime Minister suggested that structured cooperation in skill development and labour mobility could create benefits for both developed and developing economies by addressing workforce shortages while generating employment opportunities.
G7 Outreach Session Brings Together Key Partner Nations
The outreach meeting featured participation from several invited countries, including India, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, and South Korea, alongside leaders of the G7 nations. Discussions focused on economic cooperation, sustainable development, global connectivity, and strategies to address emerging international challenges affecting both developed and developing regions.
