FuelConservation – Sikkim and Tripura Introduce New Measures to Reduce Fuel Use
FuelConservation – The governments of Sikkim and Tripura have announced a fresh set of restrictions and operational changes aimed at reducing fuel consumption and limiting public expenditure as concerns over the ongoing West Asia situation continue to impact global energy markets.

The Government of Sikkim has rolled out several austerity and conservation measures that will come into force from May 18, 2026. The decision was taken after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and institutions across the country to lower petroleum usage and adopt more resource-efficient practices during the current international crisis.
Sikkim Introduces Cuts in Government Operations
As part of the new policy, Sikkim has decided to reduce the Chief Minister’s official vehicle convoy by 50 percent. State departments have also been instructed to shift to a five-day work schedule in an effort to reduce operational expenses and fuel demand.
The Home Department has further directed government offices to implement a work-from-home system for half of the state workforce through a rotational arrangement. Officials said the move is expected to decrease commuting requirements and support fuel conservation efforts across departments.
In addition, fuel allocation for government vehicles has been reduced by 30 percent. The administration has also suspended the purchase of new government vehicles for one year, although police units and emergency response services have been kept outside the scope of the restriction.
Odd-Even Vehicle System Expanded Across Districts
The state administration has decided to extend the odd-even vehicle regulation to all districts as part of its broader fuel-saving campaign. Government vehicles will also not be allowed for official use during weekends unless there is a special requirement linked to emergency duties.
Authorities stated that the measures are temporary and have been introduced in the larger public interest. Officials have been encouraged to rely more on virtual meetings, digital communication tools, and public transportation to reduce unnecessary travel and ensure better utilisation of state resources.
The notification also highlighted the importance of maintaining public security while balancing administrative efficiency during a period of rising economic uncertainty linked to international developments.
Tripura Announces Similar Austerity Measures
Meanwhile, the Tripura government has introduced its own set of expenditure reduction and fuel conservation guidelines. The order was issued by the General Administration (Administrative Reforms) Department on May 13, 2026.
Under the new instructions, all Heads of Department have been asked to ensure that only 50 percent of Group C and Group D employees attend offices each day. The remaining staff members will work remotely from home.
Departments have also been directed to prepare weekly rotation schedules so employees can attend offices on alternate weeks. Preference during the initial phase will reportedly be given to workers residing closer to their workplaces in order to minimise travel-related fuel consumption.
Employees Asked to Remain Available Online
The Tripura administration clarified that employees working remotely must remain accessible through phone calls and electronic communication throughout working hours. Staff members may also be called to the office whenever urgent administrative work arises.
Officials confirmed that the memorandum has taken immediate effect and will continue until the government issues further instructions.
Prime Minister Appeals for Public Participation
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to actively participate in reducing fuel demand by using public transport, carpooling, and electric mobility options wherever possible. He also encouraged both government and private organisations to increase the use of remote working arrangements and virtual meetings.
The Prime Minister additionally urged people to avoid unnecessary imports, including gold purchases, until the situation stabilises. He called on citizens to support locally manufactured products and strengthen domestic businesses as part of a broader economic self-reliance initiative.
According to government officials, the latest decisions by Sikkim and Tripura are intended to align state-level administrative functioning with the national effort to conserve resources and manage expenditure during a period of global uncertainty.
