FuelConservation – The Delhi government has introduced a fresh set of measures aimed at lowering fuel consumption across departments while encouraging greater use of electric mobility and public transport. The steps come shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to adopt fuel-saving habits amid rising concerns over energy dependence and resource management.
Government Departments Directed to Cut Fuel Usage
In a detailed directive issued on Wednesday, various government departments in the national capital were instructed to reduce unnecessary vehicle usage and encourage officials to rely more on public transport. Authorities have also been advised to limit foreign travel and increase the use of virtual meetings wherever possible.
The administration has asked departments to promote carpooling during inspections and official travel in an effort to reduce fuel consumption. Officials were additionally directed to strengthen electric vehicle charging facilities at government offices as part of a broader transition toward cleaner transportation systems.
According to senior officials, the measures are consistent with the Centre’s ongoing focus on reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving energy efficiency across government operations.
Delhi Jal Board to Introduce Electric Tankers
One of the major decisions under the new initiative involves the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The civic body has been instructed to gradually replace its fleet of around 200 to 250 water tankers with electric alternatives.
Officials familiar with the development said the move aligns with larger electrification targets being monitored at the national level. The transition is expected to contribute significantly to lowering diesel consumption in day-to-day operations.
The shift towards electric tankers is also being viewed as part of Delhi’s wider effort to improve environmental sustainability and reduce urban pollution caused by conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
Public Works Department Encouraged to Use Electric Pumps
The Public Works Department (PWD) has also been directed to increase the use of electric pumping systems, especially during drainage operations and emergency situations. Authorities have recommended permanent electric pumping stations over diesel-operated tractor-mounted pumps wherever feasible.
Under the new guidelines, diesel-based pumps will largely remain reserved for emergency backup use during power failures. Officials believe the change could help reduce operational fuel expenses while supporting long-term environmental goals.
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh stated that departments including PWD, DJB, and Irrigation and Flood Control are implementing the directives with seriousness and commitment. He said the administration considers the initiative an important responsibility rather than a routine formality.
Ministers Promote Public Transport Usage
The government’s campaign for fuel conservation has also been reflected in the actions of senior ministers. Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra travelled by metro on Wednesday and said he would rely only on public transport or a single official vehicle going forward.
Similarly, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar used a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus during his official commute. He appealed to residents to prefer buses, metro services, and other public transport options in order to reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion in the city.
The public display by ministers is being seen as an effort to encourage behavioural change among citizens while reinforcing the government’s message on responsible energy usage.
Chief Minister Reviews Compliance Across Departments
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said Cabinet ministers, BJP MLAs, government representatives, and officials have already started reducing vehicle usage in line with the new directives. She noted that departments are being encouraged to adopt practical measures that support energy conservation without affecting administrative efficiency.
The latest steps reflect a broader policy shift towards sustainability and reduced oil dependence. Experts believe that increased electrification of government fleets and stronger public transport adoption could play a key role in improving fuel efficiency in the capital over the coming years.
