Floods – Woman Dies After Heavy Rain Causes Severe Waterlogging in Guwahati

Floods –  A spell of heavy rain in Guwahati on Sunday evening led to widespread waterlogging across the city and resulted in the death of a woman, according to officials. The incident has once again raised concerns about urban drainage systems and emergency preparedness in the region.

Guwahati floods woman death

Woman Falls Into Drain Amid Flooding

Authorities confirmed that the deceased, identified as Payal Nath, accidentally fell into an open drain in the Maligaon Chariali locality during the downpour. She was quickly rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival. Officials from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that the tragic incident occurred during peak waterlogging conditions when visibility and movement were severely affected.

Heavy Rainfall Disrupts Normal Life

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city received over 100 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. The sudden and intense showers overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to artificial flooding in multiple neighborhoods. Residents reported being stuck for hours as roads became submerged and traffic movement came to a halt in several parts of the city.

Educational Institutions Shut as Precaution

In response to the situation, local authorities announced the closure of all government and private educational institutions within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation limits on Monday. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff, given the continued waterlogging and potential risks associated with movement across the city.

Several Areas Severely Affected

ASDMA reported that numerous localities experienced significant flooding. Areas such as Rukminigaon, Ghoramara, Juripar, Panjabari, Hatigaon, Sijubari, Satgaon, Jatia, Sawkuchi, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rajgarh, Sorumotoria, Bormotoria, Narengi, Maligaon, and Boragaon were among the worst affected. In many of these places, water entered residential zones, forcing people to remain indoors or seek assistance.

Rescue Teams Step In

Emergency response teams, including personnel from Fire and Emergency Services and the State Disaster Response Force, were deployed to assist affected residents. Officials confirmed that around 50 people were safely evacuated from flood-affected areas. Rescue operations continued late into the night, with teams working to reach stranded individuals and provide necessary support.

Water Levels Begin to Recede

By Monday, officials reported that water levels had started to go down gradually. Authorities deployed multiple water pumps in key locations such as Rukminigaon, Tarun Nagar, Anil Nagar, Lachit Nagar, and Bharalu Mukh to accelerate the drainage process. These efforts helped ease the situation in some of the most severely impacted zones.

Concerns Over Urban Infrastructure

The incident has once again highlighted the recurring issue of urban flooding in Guwahati during heavy rainfall. Experts and residents alike have pointed to inadequate drainage systems and rapid urbanization as contributing factors. While immediate relief measures have helped stabilize the situation, long-term solutions remain a critical need for the city.

The tragic loss of life and widespread disruption serve as a reminder of the challenges posed by extreme weather events and the importance of strengthening disaster management systems in vulnerable urban areas.
