Flash Floods – Two Swept Away as Heavy Rain Causes Damage in Jammu and Kashmir
Flash Floods – Heavy rainfall and sudden water surges have triggered search and rescue efforts in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, while fresh flash floods have caused extensive damage to farmland and crops in Rajouri district.
Two people were swept away after water suddenly rushed into a ravine in Ramnagar, prompting authorities to launch an immediate search operation, officials said.
Search Operation Underway in Ramnagar
Executive Magistrate First Class and Tehsildar Ramnagar Satish Kumar said rescue teams were alerted soon after information about the incident was received. Police personnel and teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were deployed to locate the missing individuals.
According to the official, one body was found trapped against a rock at the site. Rescue personnel were working to recover it, while efforts to locate the second person continued.
Satish Kumar said authorities moved quickly after receiving information about the sudden rise in water inside the ravine. He also contacted the local Station House Officer and the SDRF team to coordinate the response.
The incident highlights the risks posed by sudden water surges in ravines and other low-lying or vulnerable areas during periods of heavy rainfall.
Flash Floods Damage Farmland in Rajouri
Meanwhile, fresh flash floods have caused significant damage to agricultural fields and standing crops in Mehra village of Rajouri district. Several farming families have reported losses after heavy rain sent floodwater through parts of the area.
Residents said the latest flooding has added to the destruction caused by the floods reported on July 19. Large portions of fertile farmland have been washed away, affecting agricultural land that had supported dozens of families.
Repeated spells of intense rain have also caused erosion along riverbanks and fields. Residents are concerned that the damage could have consequences beyond the current crop season, particularly for households that depend on farming and livestock for their income.
River Course Change Raises Concerns
The changing course of the river has emerged as another concern for villagers. In several areas, water has cut through agricultural land and removed stretches of cultivable soil, reducing the amount of land available for farming.
The loss of fertile topsoil and agricultural fields could make recovery difficult for affected families. Residents are seeking support from the administration for restoration work and compensation for the losses caused by the floods.
Officials are assessing the extent of the damage in the affected areas. The assessment is expected to help determine the assistance required by families whose farmland, crops and livelihoods have been affected.
IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated spells of heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
The weather conditions could increase the risk of localised flooding, flash floods and landslides, particularly in areas already vulnerable because of their terrain and recent rainfall.
Authorities have advised residents living close to rivers, streams and landslide-prone locations to remain cautious and follow instructions issued by local officials. People in vulnerable areas have also been urged to stay alert during periods of intense rainfall.
With damage assessment continuing in Rajouri and rescue efforts underway in Ramnagar, authorities are closely monitoring the situation as further rain could create additional challenges in vulnerable locations.
