FireSafety – Delhi Launches Citywide Safety Checks After Deadly Fire Incident
FireSafety – Authorities in Delhi have initiated a broad safety response following a fatal fire incident in the Malviya Nagar area, with senior officials outlining a coordinated strategy aimed at strengthening fire prevention, improving enforcement, and ensuring quicker emergency assistance during future disasters.
The initiative was discussed during a high-level review meeting held on Wednesday, jointly led by Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Home Minister Ashish Sood. The meeting focused on identifying safety gaps and developing an integrated action plan involving multiple government departments.
Inquiry Ordered Into Malviya Nagar Tragedy
As part of the immediate response, officials announced a magisterial investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding the fire. The inquiry will be conducted under the supervision of the concerned district magistrate. Authorities said the investigation will determine the causes of the incident and identify any lapses or individuals responsible.
The review meeting brought together several senior government officials, including the chief secretary, Municipal Corporation of Delhi commissioner, principal secretary for Home, secretary of Tourism, secretary of Health and Family Welfare, principal director of Delhi Fire Services, and the special chief executive officer of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.
Month-Long Inspection Drive Announced
One of the major decisions taken during the meeting was the launch of a citywide inspection campaign focused on fire safety compliance. Beginning June 4, authorities will conduct a month-long verification drive across various commercial establishments.
The inspections will cover hotels, guest houses, lodges, restaurants, nursing homes, coaching centres, and other businesses where public safety standards are required. Officials stated that the objective is to ensure that all establishments follow prescribed fire prevention measures and maintain essential emergency infrastructure.
Focus on Illegal Building Expansions
Separately, Lieutenant-Governor Sandhu also chaired a review session with civic authorities to address broader concerns related to urban safety and governance. During the discussion, he instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to strictly implement building regulations and take action against unauthorized structural modifications.
The directive comes shortly after a building collapse in the Saket area that resulted in the loss of six lives. Authorities emphasized that illegal construction and unapproved extensions pose serious safety risks and require stronger monitoring and enforcement.
Strengthening Civic Infrastructure
Officials also reviewed several civic priorities aimed at improving the city’s preparedness for emergencies and seasonal challenges. Discussions included measures to enhance urban infrastructure, improve structural safety standards, and strengthen administrative coordination among departments.
Special attention was given to the desilting of stormwater drains ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. Authorities stressed the importance of completing the work on time to reduce the risk of waterlogging and ensure smoother drainage during heavy rainfall.
Government Signals Stronger Safety Enforcement
The latest measures reflect a broader effort by the Delhi administration to improve public safety standards across the city. By combining stricter inspections, accountability mechanisms, and infrastructure reviews, authorities aim to reduce the likelihood of future tragedies and enhance emergency readiness.
