EnergySecurity – Rahul Gandhi Targets Modi Over West Asia Crisis Remarks

EnergySecurity –  Congress leader Rahul Gandhi intensified his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday after the prime minister appealed to citizens to adopt measures aimed at reducing the economic impact of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, accused the government of failing to manage the country’s economic and energy-related challenges effectively. In a sharp post shared on social media platform X, he argued that the government was transferring the burden of crisis management onto ordinary citizens instead of presenting a stronger national strategy.

Congress Questions Government’s Economic Preparedness

Referring to the prime minister’s recent public remarks, Gandhi said citizens were being advised to avoid buying gold, reduce fuel consumption, postpone foreign travel, and cut down on household expenses such as cooking oil and fertilisers. According to the Congress leader, such appeals reflected weaknesses in governance rather than a confident economic plan.

He stated that after more than a decade in power, the government should have been capable of handling international disruptions without asking citizens to alter their daily lives in significant ways. Gandhi further alleged that the Centre repeatedly shifts responsibility to the public whenever major challenges emerge.

The Congress leader also used strong political language against the prime minister, claiming the current administration was no longer capable of effectively steering the country through difficult global conditions.

Opposition Escalates Criticism Over Fuel and Trade Concerns

The Congress party had earlier criticised Modi’s comments on Sunday as well, accusing the government of lacking a clear roadmap to safeguard India’s energy security amid the continuing tensions in West Asia. Party leaders argued that global instability had already begun affecting fuel prices and trade flows, making long-term planning essential.

According to the opposition party, instead of asking citizens to make lifestyle sacrifices, the government should focus on creating stronger contingency mechanisms to shield the economy from international disruptions. Congress leaders maintained that policy planning and strategic reserves should play a larger role during global crises.

The party also questioned whether the Centre had taken sufficient diplomatic and economic measures to reduce India’s dependence on volatile international energy markets.

Modi Urges Citizens to Conserve Resources

Prime Minister Modi made the remarks while addressing a public rally organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad on Sunday. During his speech, he highlighted the growing economic pressure caused by the conflict in West Asia and called for collective efforts to reduce unnecessary spending and conserve foreign exchange.

The prime minister encouraged people to limit petrol and diesel usage by opting for metro rail services, carpooling, electric vehicles, and railway-based transport systems wherever possible. He also suggested that companies and offices consider reviving work-from-home practices that became common during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Modi said the country must remain cautious as disruptions in global supply chains were increasing costs associated with petroleum products and fertilisers. He stressed that every citizen could contribute to economic stability by making responsible consumption choices during uncertain international conditions.

Focus on Self-Reliance and Foreign Exchange Savings

During the address, Modi also advised people to postpone non-essential foreign travel and gold purchases for at least a year in order to help conserve foreign exchange reserves. He noted that international tensions were placing additional strain on economies worldwide, including India.

The prime minister further called for lower edible oil consumption, reduced dependence on chemical fertilisers, and wider promotion of natural farming practices. He reiterated the government’s push for self-reliance through the use of domestic products and sustainable alternatives.

According to Modi, India had successfully adapted to digital work culture and virtual communication during the pandemic, and similar adjustments could again help the country navigate present economic uncertainties.

The political exchange between the ruling BJP and the Congress comes at a time when rising global tensions are influencing fuel markets, trade costs, and economic planning across several countries.
