Energy – PM Modi to Hold Key Meeting with States on Crisis
Energy – Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to convene a crucial virtual meeting with chief ministers from across the country on Friday evening to assess the evolving situation in West Asia and its potential impact on India’s energy sector.

Focus on West Asia Conflict and Energy Impact
The scheduled discussion comes shortly after the Prime Minister addressed both Houses of Parliament regarding the ongoing crisis and its global implications. According to government sources, the meeting will primarily evaluate how the conflict in West Asia is affecting international supply chains, particularly energy imports crucial for India’s economy.
Officials indicated that the Prime Minister aims to ensure that states are adequately prepared to manage any disruptions, especially those related to oil and gas supplies. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for energy transportation, remains a central concern due to its vulnerability amid the ongoing tensions.
Participation and Coordination Strategy
Chief ministers and Lieutenant Governors from most states and Union territories are expected to participate, with the exception of regions currently heading into elections, including West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Separate discussions are also likely to take place with chief secretaries from poll-bound states to ensure administrative preparedness.
Sources highlighted that the Centre is looking to strengthen coordination with states to manage fuel availability effectively. The Prime Minister is expected to encourage a unified approach, stressing cooperation similar to what was seen during the Covid-19 pandemic response.
Preventing Supply Disruptions and Misuse
One of the major concerns likely to be addressed during the meeting is the risk of hoarding and black-marketing of LPG cylinders. The Prime Minister had previously raised this issue in Parliament and is expected to call on state governments to maintain strict monitoring mechanisms.
Additionally, there may be a renewed push for expanding piped natural gas (PNG) connections to reduce dependency on LPG cylinders and improve distribution efficiency. Officials believe that proactive measures at the state level will be essential in avoiding shortages and ensuring fair access to fuel resources.
Government’s Preparedness and Monitoring Mechanisms
The Centre has already established an inter-ministerial group that regularly reviews developments related to imports and exports. This group monitors potential disruptions and works on strategies to safeguard supply chains.
During his address in the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister emphasized that India cannot remain insulated from prolonged global conflicts. He pointed out that trade routes are already facing pressure and that continued instability could lead to significant consequences for the country’s energy security.
At the same time, he reassured that the government is actively working to strengthen resilience through long-term planning and diversification of supply sources.
Call for Unity and Strategic Response
The Prime Minister has repeatedly underlined the importance of a collective national response. He urged political leaders and state governments to act in a “Team India” spirit, focusing on practical solutions rather than differences.
He also stressed that Parliament must send a strong message advocating peace, given the broader global impact of the conflict. The government believes that a coordinated approach between the Centre and states will play a decisive role in managing the situation effectively.
Upcoming Global Engagement at G7 Summit
In addition to domestic efforts, India is also engaging on the international stage. The Prime Minister is expected to attend the upcoming G7 Summit, where global leaders will discuss pressing geopolitical and economic challenges, including the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
The announcement followed recent diplomatic interactions between External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot during a G7-related meeting. These engagements reflect India’s intent to remain actively involved in global discussions while safeguarding its national interests.
