The state administration has reportedly increased police presence in Chennai and other sensitive regions following inputs from central intelligence agencies regarding possible law-and-order concerns. Officials are said to be monitoring the evolving political situation closely as uncertainty continues over the formation of the next government.

TVK Emerges as Largest Party in Assembly

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has significantly reshaped the state’s political landscape. Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party launched by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, making it the single largest party in the House.

Despite the strong electoral performance, the party has not yet crossed the majority mark required to form the government independently. The current political deadlock has created intense discussions among major political players across the state.

Vijay Meets Governor to Stake Claim

On Wednesday evening, Vijay met Governor R.V. Arlekar at Raj Bhavan in Chennai to formally present his claim to form the government. According to political sources, the TVK chief submitted a list showing support from 113 MLAs, including 108 legislators from his own party and five MLAs from the Congress party.

However, reports indicate that the Governor informed Vijay that support from at least 118 legislators would be necessary before an official invitation to form the government could be extended.

The development has delayed the anticipated swearing-in ceremony and added further uncertainty to the rapidly changing political environment in the state.

Alliance Negotiations Yet to Deliver Results

TVK leaders were reportedly engaged in discussions with several regional and alliance partners, including the PMK, Left parties and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). Political observers had expected these negotiations to help TVK comfortably cross the majority threshold.

However, talks appear to have slowed in recent hours, with no official confirmation of additional support reaching the party. As a result, TVK continues to remain short of the numbers needed to establish a stable government.

The uncertainty surrounding coalition support has become a key factor behind the ongoing suspense over who will eventually lead the next administration in Tamil Nadu.

Speculation Grows Around Alternative Political Moves

As political discussions intensified late into Wednesday night, speculation emerged over possible alternative combinations among rival parties. Reports suggested that the AIADMK could explore options to form a government if TVK fails to gather the required support.

Political insiders indicated that senior leaders from both the DMK and AIADMK held separate meetings to review the evolving situation and assess possible future strategies.

Despite the speculation, the DMK later issued a statement indicating that the party intends to remain in the opposition, respecting the electoral mandate delivered by voters.

Rajinikanth Meeting Draws Attention

Another major development that attracted public attention was actor Rajinikanth’s meeting with outgoing Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin. The interaction quickly sparked political discussions across the state, although neither side disclosed details about the conversation.

The meeting has added to the atmosphere of uncertainty already surrounding the government formation process.

Meanwhile, security agencies and state authorities continue to maintain heightened vigilance as Tamil Nadu awaits clarity on its next government. Political observers believe the coming days could prove crucial in determining the direction of the state’s leadership after one of the most closely watched Assembly elections in recent years.
