ElectionUpdate – Congress Moves Tamil Nadu MLAs to Hyderabad Amid Talks

ElectionUpdate – The political atmosphere in Tamil Nadu remained tense on Saturday as uncertainty continued over the formation of the next state government. In a significant political development, the Congress party shifted five of its MLAs from Tamil Nadu to Hyderabad, a move widely viewed as an attempt to shield legislators from possible pressure or inducement by rival political groups.

The legislators were reportedly accompanied by senior Congress leader and Melur MLA P Viswanathan, who previously handled party responsibilities in Telangana as the All India Congress Committee’s in-charge for the state. Party insiders indicated that he is overseeing coordination efforts while the MLAs stay in Hyderabad during the ongoing political negotiations.

Congress Strengthens Internal Coordination

Sources within the party suggested that the relocation was carried out as a precautionary measure at a time when political equations in Tamil Nadu remain fluid. Such steps are often taken by political parties in closely contested situations to ensure unity among legislators and avoid any unexpected shifts in support.

The Congress has already extended its backing to actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly election. According to party sources, Viswanathan could be considered for a ministerial position if the TVK succeeds in forming the government.

TVK Emerges as Key Player After Assembly Election

The Tamil Nadu Assembly election, conducted on April 23, produced a highly competitive outcome. Vijay-led TVK secured 108 seats in its debut election appearance, falling just 10 seats short of the majority mark required to independently form the government.

Despite missing a clear majority, the strong electoral performance positioned TVK at the center of post-election discussions. Following the results, the party reportedly initiated talks with several opposition parties that had earlier aligned with the DMK alliance.

Among the parties approached were the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). The outreach was aimed at gathering sufficient support to stake claim for government formation in the state.

Left Parties and VCK Likely to Extend Support

Political observers believe the support extended by Left parties has strengthened TVK’s prospects in the ongoing negotiations. The VCK, considered a long-time ally of communist parties in Tamil Nadu politics, is also expected to formally announce its support for the Vijay-led alliance in the coming days.

Party insiders indicated that the VCK leadership is closely monitoring developments before making an official declaration. However, the party is widely expected to align with the broader anti-DMK political front taking shape after the election verdict.

Political Activity Intensifies Across Tamil Nadu

The latest developments have intensified political discussions across Tamil Nadu, with parties continuing back-channel talks to secure numbers necessary for forming a stable government. The coming days are expected to be crucial as alliances become clearer and formal announcements are made regarding support arrangements.

Political analysts say the situation reflects the growing influence of regional forces in Tamil Nadu politics, especially after TVK’s impressive debut performance under Vijay’s leadership. With no party achieving a decisive majority, coalition-building efforts are likely to determine the state’s next government.
