ElectionTech – ECINET Strengthens Poll Security During High-Traffic Elections

ElectionTech – The Election Commission of India highlighted the growing importance of its digital election management platform, ECINET, in conducting peaceful and efficient assembly elections across multiple states. Officials said the platform played a major role in improving election monitoring, speeding up result-related operations, and supporting smooth poll management during the recently concluded state elections.

Cyber Threats Blocked During Election Process

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that the Election Commission’s technology teams successfully prevented nearly 68 lakh suspicious cyber intrusion attempts during the assembly elections held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. According to officials, the majority of these attacks were detected around the counting phase when online traffic sharply increased.

The commission revealed that the attempted cyber activities originated from both domestic and international sources. Key digital systems linked to election management and result dissemination were among the primary targets. Despite the heavy volume of malicious traffic, authorities said there was no disruption in the functioning of the election infrastructure.

ECINET Records Massive Public Usage

The Election Commission said ECINET, launched officially in January 2026, has witnessed rapid public adoption and has already crossed the 10 crore download mark. Before its nationwide rollout, the application’s beta version was tested during the Bihar Assembly elections in 2025 to evaluate operational performance and user response.

Officials noted that the platform experienced exceptionally high engagement during polling and counting days. On April 9, 23, and 29, the system reportedly handled more than 98 crore digital interactions. During vote counting on May 4, the platform processed an average of nearly three crore hits every minute, reflecting the scale of public interest and dependence on digital election updates.

New QR Code Security System Introduced

In an effort to improve security arrangements at counting centres, the Election Commission introduced a QR code-enabled identification process through the ECINET platform. Authorities described it as a major step towards preventing unauthorised access during the sensitive counting process.

More than 3.2 lakh QR-based photo identity passes were generated on counting day for election staff, officials, and authorised personnel across different locations. Election authorities said the system helped streamline entry management while reducing the possibility of security breaches at counting venues.

Technology Increasingly Central to Election Management

Election officials said the successful deployment of ECINET demonstrates how technology is becoming central to India’s electoral management system. The commission believes the platform has contributed significantly to transparency, faster reporting, secure access control, and better coordination among election authorities during large-scale polls.

The Election Commission also maintained that the recent assembly elections witnessed peaceful polling and strong voter participation, supported by improved digital infrastructure and real-time monitoring systems. Officials indicated that the experience gained from these elections may help shape future technology-driven reforms in India’s electoral process.
