Elections – Voting Begins Across Kerala for Crucial Assembly Battle
Elections – Voting for the Kerala Assembly elections commenced on Thursday morning, with people across the state turning out early to participate in the democratic process. Polling began at 7 am in a single phase, covering all 140 constituencies, as voters lined up at booths to cast their ballots in what is considered a closely watched political contest.

Early Voting Sees Active Participation
From the early hours, polling stations witnessed steady voter turnout, reflecting strong public engagement. Election officials ensured that arrangements were in place for a smooth voting process, including facilities to manage queues and maintain order. Special provisions, such as mobile deposit bags, were introduced to help voters safely store personal belongings while casting their votes.
The Election Commission emphasized its commitment to conducting a free and fair election, deploying adequate personnel and monitoring systems across the state.
Political Leaders Express Confidence
Senior Congress leader and Peravoor candidate Sunny Joseph cast his vote in Kannur and urged citizens to vote responsibly. He expressed optimism about his party’s prospects, stating that the United Democratic Front (UDF) expects to secure a strong mandate. According to him, the alliance is likely to win a clear majority and form the next government.
Joseph also indicated that the leadership decision, including the chief ministerial candidate, would be made in consultation with the party’s central leadership after the results.
Opposition Targets Ruling Government
Congress Member of Parliament Hibi Eden, who voted in Kochi, echoed similar confidence about the UDF’s chances. He suggested that there is a visible desire among voters for political change in the state.
Eden criticized the current administration, claiming that public dissatisfaction has grown over the past decade. He further predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would struggle to make an impact in the state and may not secure any seats in the assembly.
Scale of the Electoral Exercise
The election involves a large electorate, with more than 2.6 crore registered voters deciding the outcome. Among them, women voters slightly outnumber men, highlighting the significant participation of female electors in the state’s democratic process.
A total of 883 candidates are contesting across all constituencies, making this one of the more competitive elections in recent years. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, when the final results will determine the political direction of the state.
Key Contest Between Major Alliances
The electoral battle is largely seen as a contest between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition UDF. However, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is also aiming to expand its presence, having increased its vote share in previous elections.
Political observers note that voter turnout and regional dynamics will play a crucial role in shaping the final outcome. As polling progresses, attention remains focused on whether the incumbent government can retain power or if the opposition will succeed in securing a mandate for change.
