Elections – Vote Counting Begins as BJP Leaders Express Confidence in Bengal

Elections – As counting of votes got underway in West Bengal on Monday morning, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed strong optimism about the party’s prospects, saying early indications suggest a shift in voter preference toward development-focused governance.

West bengal election counting trends

Early Trends Spark Political Reactions

Speaking during the initial phase of counting, BJP’s state in-charge Mangal Pandey stated that preliminary trends point toward a desire among voters for progress under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to him, people in the state appear inclined toward a “double-engine government,” referring to alignment between state and central leadership.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya also conveyed confidence, noting that fluctuations in early trends are natural but do not alter the broader outlook. He remarked that the party remains assured about forming the government once counting concludes.

Leaders Highlight Confidence in Outcome

Senior BJP leader Shishir Bajoria echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that early patterns often indicate the direction of final results. He said that while a clearer picture will emerge later in the day, the party expects to secure a decisive mandate.

The counting process began at 8 a.m., starting with postal ballots. Officials confirmed that the process is being closely monitored to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Changes in Counting Procedure This Year

This election cycle has introduced a revised counting method by the Election Commission of India. Traditionally, electronic voting machine (EVM) votes were counted only after the complete tally of postal ballots. However, this time, postal ballots were counted exclusively for the first 30 minutes.

From 8:30 a.m. onward, both postal ballots and EVM votes are being counted simultaneously. Election officials explained that this adjustment is intended to streamline the process and ensure that postal ballot counting concludes before the final rounds of EVM counting.

An official associated with the Chief Electoral Officer’s office said that if postal ballot counting is still pending during the final rounds, EVM counting may be temporarily paused to allow completion. This approach is expected to provide clearer trends by midday.

Constituencies and Repolling Update

Counting is currently taking place for 293 out of the 294 विधानसभा constituencies. The Election Commission had earlier ordered a repoll in the Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas district. Voting there is scheduled for May 21, and the result will be declared on May 24.

Political Landscape and Past Performance

The electoral contest in the state remains primarily between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP. In the previous assembly elections held in 2021, the Trinamool Congress secured a dominant victory with 216 seats, while the BJP won 77 seats. The All India Secular Front managed to win a single seat.

The Congress and the CPI(M)-led Left Front, despite contesting together at that time, failed to win any seats. In the current election, both parties have chosen to contest separately, although the Left Front has entered into a seat-sharing arrangement with the All India Secular Front.

High Voter Turnout and Exit Poll Signals

The elections, conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, recorded a notably high voter turnout of around 93 percent. This strong participation has been interpreted by analysts as a sign of heightened political engagement among voters.

Most exit polls, with a few exceptions, have indicated the possibility of a significant political shift in the state. Several projections suggest that the long-standing Trinamool Congress government could face a serious challenge from the BJP.

As counting progresses, political observers are closely watching how these predictions align with actual results. By the afternoon, clearer trends are expected to provide a more definitive picture of the electoral outcome.
