Elections – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday launched a sharp critique of the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of attempting to weaken the cultural identity and constitutional rights of the people of Bengal. Speaking through a social media post, she also reflected on her public outreach during Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, emphasizing her continued engagement with citizens.
Chief Minister Marks New Year Among Citizens
Banerjee said she chose to spend Poila Boishakh with the people of the state, describing the interaction as meaningful and deeply connected to her responsibilities. She noted that since taking office in 2011, her primary focus has been to address the needs and aspirations of the people of West Bengal.
According to her statement, the day was spent walking alongside residents, sharing their experiences, and reaffirming her commitment to inclusive governance. She highlighted that her political journey has consistently centered on representing the voices of ordinary citizens.
Allegations Against BJP Over Cultural and Constitutional Concerns
The Chief Minister accused the BJP of pursuing policies that, in her view, undermine Bengal’s distinct cultural identity. She claimed that efforts were being made to impose uniformity across regions, which could dilute linguistic, cultural, and social diversity.
Banerjee further alleged that individuals from Bengal have faced difficulties in states governed by the BJP, including challenges related to their identity and rights. She expressed concern that such developments could affect the broader constitutional framework meant to protect citizens across India.
She also asserted that attempts to influence Bengal from outside the state would not succeed, emphasizing the region’s historical resilience and independent political character.
Appeal to Voters Ahead of Polling
With elections approaching, Banerjee urged voters to support candidates from the All India Trinamool Congress. She framed the appeal as a collective responsibility to safeguard the state’s values and ensure continuity in governance.
In her message, she named several party candidates contesting from different constituencies, encouraging citizens to extend their support to them. She stressed that the electoral process provides an opportunity for people to reinforce their commitment to the principles of “Maa, Mati, Manush,” a slogan closely associated with her party’s ideology.
Banerjee called on voters to consider issues of identity, dignity, and development while casting their ballots, presenting the election as a significant moment for the state’s future direction.
Two-Phase Polling and High-Stakes Contest
The upcoming elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases, scheduled for April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes is set to take place on May 4.
The political contest is expected to be closely watched, with the Trinamool Congress aiming to secure a fourth consecutive term in office. Meanwhile, the BJP is seeking to build on its previous electoral gains and form the government in the state.
