Elections – International Observers Praise Assam Poll Management and Voter Participation

Elections – Assam witnessed a strong display of democratic participation on Thursday as voting began for the 2026 Assembly elections, drawing attention from both domestic stakeholders and international observers. Delegates participating in the International Election Visitors’ Programme visited multiple polling stations across the state to closely observe the voting process and assess its organisation. Their visit highlighted the global interest in India’s electoral practices and the scale at which they are conducted.

Assam poll management praised

International Delegates Note Efficient Poll Arrangements

According to officials, the visiting delegates expressed appreciation for the detailed planning and smooth execution of polling arrangements. They observed that the election process was conducted efficiently, with proper systems in place to manage large voter turnout. The Election Commission shared that the visitors were particularly impressed by how polling stations were managed and how voters were facilitated throughout the day.

Early Voter Turnout Reflects Strong Public Engagement

Polling began early in the morning, and long queues were seen outside several polling stations, indicating high enthusiasm among voters. Authorities encouraged citizens to participate actively, describing the election as a celebration of democracy. The early turnout suggested that voters were eager to exercise their right and contribute to shaping the state’s future leadership.

Key Political Alliances Face Crucial Contest

The election is being closely watched as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance aims to secure a third consecutive term in the state. On the other hand, the Congress-led alliance, which includes regional and left parties, is attempting to regain political ground and bring a shift in governance. The contest is expected to be competitive, with both alliances campaigning extensively in the run-up to polling.

Large Electorate and Diverse Voter Base

Assam has a substantial electorate of over 2.5 crore voters eligible to cast their ballots for the 126-member legislative assembly. The voter base includes a nearly equal number of male and female electors, along with registered transgender voters and service voters. A notable segment of young voters aged 18–19 is participating for the first time, while senior citizens and persons with disabilities also form a significant part of the electorate.

Extensive Security and Monitoring Measures in Place

To ensure a peaceful and fair voting process, security has been strengthened across polling stations. Central Armed Police Forces, including personnel from the CRPF, have been deployed in sensitive areas. Additionally, micro observers have been stationed at critical locations to monitor proceedings closely and ensure adherence to election guidelines.

Massive Deployment of Personnel and Equipment

The scale of the election is reflected in the deployment of over 1.5 lakh polling personnel tasked with managing the voting process. Authorities have arranged tens of thousands of ballot units, control units, and VVPAT machines, with additional reserves kept ready for contingencies. Backup personnel have also been prepared to address any unexpected situations during polling.

Previous Election Results Provide Context

In the last Assembly elections held in 2021, the NDA secured a clear majority, winning 75 out of 126 seats. The BJP emerged as the dominant force within the alliance. Meanwhile, the opposition alliance led by Congress struggled to make a significant impact, securing a limited number of seats despite a broad coalition.

Counting Scheduled for Early May

The counting of votes for the current election is scheduled to take place on May 4. The outcome will determine whether the ruling alliance retains power or if the opposition manages to alter the political landscape of the state.
