Elections – BJP Strengthens Hold Across Reserved Seats in Key States
Elections – The Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies registered commanding victories in constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) during the Assembly elections in Assam and West Bengal, underlining a major shift in voter support across socially significant regions. The results, announced on May 4, reflected the growing influence of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in reserved constituencies that have traditionally witnessed fragmented political contests.

BJP Records Strong Gains in Assam Reserved Constituencies
In Assam, the BJP crossed the majority mark independently for the first time in the 126-member Assembly, while the NDA coalition secured more than 100 seats overall. The victory marked the alliance’s third consecutive term in the northeastern state.
Reserved constituencies played a crucial role in the outcome. Out of the nine Assembly seats reserved for Scheduled Castes, the BJP secured five seats, while the NDA alliance collectively won eight. The Congress managed to win only one SC-reserved constituency.
The BJP also delivered a dominant performance in Scheduled Tribe constituencies. Assam has 19 ST-reserved seats, and the BJP secured victory in 13 of them. Along with its alliance partners, including the Bodoland People’s Front and the Asom Gana Parishad, the NDA swept all 19 ST seats in the state.
Political analysts believe that recent constituency delimitation contributed significantly to this outcome. The reorganization increased the number of ST-reserved seats from 16 to 19 and SC-reserved seats from eight to nine, strengthening the electoral influence of indigenous and tribal communities.
Expansion in Tribal Regions Strengthens BJP Position
Observers noted that the BJP’s growing presence in Upper Assam and hill districts helped the party consolidate support among tribal voters. Its alliance strategy, especially the partnership with regional parties such as the Bodoland People’s Front, also played a key role in securing a near-complete hold over tribal constituencies.
The results are being viewed as evidence of the BJP’s ability to broaden its social support base beyond urban and traditional strongholds. Analysts said reserved constituencies have increasingly become a reliable electoral pillar for the ruling alliance in Assam.
West Bengal Witnesses Major Political Shift
West Bengal also recorded a historic outcome for the BJP, which won 207 Assembly seats and is set to form its first government in the state. The results significantly reduced the strength of the Trinamool Congress, which managed to secure 80 seats.
The BJP’s performance in SC and ST reserved constituencies highlighted a decisive political transformation. Of the 68 Scheduled Caste reserved seats in the state, the BJP won 51, while the Trinamool Congress secured 17 seats.
The party also achieved a complete sweep in all 16 Scheduled Tribe reserved constituencies. Political experts pointed out that tribal regions such as Junglemahal and areas of North Bengal delivered a uniform mandate in favour of the BJP.
Overall, the BJP captured 67 out of the 84 reserved SC and ST constituencies in West Bengal, leaving very limited space for opposition parties.
Community Support Emerges as Key Factor
Political observers also highlighted the continued support of the Matua community as an important factor behind the BJP’s success in several SC-dominated constituencies near the Bangladesh border. The consolidation of Dalit and tribal votes in favour of the BJP is being viewed as one of the defining trends of the election.
The results suggest that the BJP has expanded its appeal among economically and socially weaker sections, particularly in regions where electoral loyalties were once divided among several parties.
NDA Allies Register Gains in Southern States
In Tamil Nadu, NDA ally AIADMK performed strongly in reserved constituencies by winning nine out of the 46 Scheduled Caste reserved seats and one of the two Scheduled Tribe reserved constituencies.
In Puducherry, the All India NR Congress, another NDA partner, secured victory in two of the five SC-reserved Assembly seats.
The combined results across multiple states indicate that the NDA alliance has significantly strengthened its position in reserved constituencies, turning these seats into a major support base during the latest round of Assembly elections.
