Elections – BJP Gains Early Edge in Assam Counting Trends

Elections – Early trends from the ongoing vote count in Assam suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is moving steadily toward securing a majority, according to senior party leader and state minister Pijush Hazarika. Speaking from a counting centre in Morigaon on Monday, Hazarika indicated that the initial figures point to a favourable outcome for the ruling alliance.

Early Leads Indicate Strong Position for BJP

Hazarika stated that the first rounds of counting have shown the BJP taking a clear lead in several constituencies, including Morigaon and Jagiroad. He described the early numbers as encouraging and reflective of the party’s performance over the past term. According to him, the results so far mirror the impact of governance initiatives carried out under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He added that the party remains confident of forming the next government as counting progresses. While trends are still evolving, the early advantage has boosted morale among party workers and supporters.

Development Work Cited as Key Factor

Highlighting the role of governance, Hazarika credited the so-called double-engine model of administration for the party’s performance. He said the state and central governments have worked in coordination to implement development projects aimed at improving infrastructure, public services, and welfare schemes.

According to him, voters have acknowledged these efforts, which is being reflected in the early counting figures. He emphasized that the government has remained focused on delivering results across sectors, including roads, healthcare, and rural development.

Counting Process Underway Across the State

Vote counting is currently taking place at multiple centres across Assam under tight security arrangements. Officials have ensured that the process remains orderly and transparent. As more rounds of counting are completed, the overall picture is expected to become clearer.

Initial data indicates that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is ahead in around 85 Assembly seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance is leading in approximately 30 constituencies. However, these numbers are based on early trends and may change as counting continues.

High Voter Participation and Broad Contest

The Assembly elections were held on April 9, recording a significant voter turnout of 85.96 percent. More than 2.5 crore voters were eligible to participate, reflecting strong public engagement in the electoral process.

A total of 722 candidates contested the elections, including 59 women. The Congress fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, followed closely by the BJP with 90 nominees. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) contested 30 seats.

Diverse Political Representation in the Race

Among NDA allies, the Asom Gana Parishad fielded 26 candidates, while the Bodo Peoples’ Front contested 11 seats. On the opposition side, several regional parties also participated. Raijor Dal put forward 13 candidates, Assam Jatiya Parishad contested 10 seats, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) fielded three candidates. The All Party Hill Leaders Conference entered two constituencies.

Other political players included the Aam Aadmi Party and United People’s Party Liberal, each contesting 18 seats. The Trinamool Congress fielded candidates in 22 constituencies, while the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha contested 16 seats. Additionally, 258 Independent candidates were part of the electoral contest.

Awaiting Final Outcome

While early trends offer an initial direction, election officials have reiterated that final results will only be confirmed after all counting rounds are completed. Political observers note that shifts can occur as more votes are tallied.

For now, the BJP appears to have an early advantage, but the final outcome will depend on the complete counting process. Stakeholders across parties continue to monitor developments closely as Assam awaits the official declaration of results.
