Alleged Note Surfaces Ahead of Polls

With Assam preparing for voting on April 9, an unverified suicide note dated 2024 has begun circulating online, drawing attention to Guwahati Central constituency candidate Vijay Gupta. The document, whose authenticity has not been officially confirmed, reportedly links Gupta to the death of a businessman.

Local media reports suggest that the note is connected to Sijo Jacob, a 47-year-old businessman based in Guwahati and originally from Kerala. According to these reports, the note allegedly describes Gupta as a reason behind Jacob’s death.

Background of the Incident

Sijo Jacob was found dead in February 2024 in a hotel room located in the Police Bazaar area of Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. At the time, the circumstances surrounding his death had drawn limited public attention. However, the recent emergence of the alleged note has brought the incident back into focus.

Authorities have not issued any fresh statement confirming the contents or validity of the note, and there is no public record indicating that the matter led to legal proceedings involving the BJP leader.

Candidate Rejects Allegations

Vijay Gupta has firmly denied any connection to the claims being circulated. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, he described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

He stated that if there had been any truth to the claims, legal action would have been taken long ago. Gupta emphasized that no case has been registered against him in connection with the incident.

He also expressed concern over the timing of the controversy, suggesting that it could disrupt social harmony in the state. According to him, spreading unverified information during an election period could harm the broader social environment.

Concerns Over Misinformation

Gupta further pointed out that this was not the first instance of misleading information being circulated during the campaign. He referred to earlier rumors regarding candidate nominations in the Guwahati Central seat, which he said were also incorrect.

He urged the public to remain cautious and avoid being influenced by unverified claims, especially during a sensitive period like elections.

Electoral Contest in Guwahati Central

The Guwahati Central constituency is witnessing a closely watched contest this election. Vijay Gupta is competing against Kunki Chowdhury, a 27-year-old candidate from the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

Chowdhury brings an academic background that includes studies at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies and University College London. Her candidature has added a fresh dynamic to the race, particularly among younger voters.

Awaiting Official Clarification

As the situation stands, there has been no official confirmation regarding the authenticity of the alleged suicide note. Election observers note that such controversies, especially when unverified, can influence public perception and voter sentiment.

Authorities and election officials are expected to monitor the situation closely to ensure that the electoral process remains fair and free from misinformation.

The development highlights the growing role of digital platforms in shaping political narratives, particularly during election cycles, where unverified information can spread rapidly.
