ElectionResults – Dharmanagar Bypoll Vote Counting Begins Under Tight Security

ElectionResults – The counting of votes for the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election commenced at 8 a.m. on Monday amid extensive security arrangements, according to officials overseeing the process. The bypoll, held on April 9 in North Tripura district, has drawn significant attention due to its competitive political landscape.

Counting Process and Arrangements

Officials confirmed that the counting procedure started with postal ballots, followed by votes recorded in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The entire process is being conducted in four rounds at the district headquarters in Dharmanagar.

A single counting hall has been designated for the exercise, equipped with 14 tables, including a dedicated table for postal ballots. Each table is managed by trained counting staff, including supervisors and assistants, while observers appointed by the Election Commission are present to ensure transparency and adherence to guidelines.

Authorities expect the final results to be announced later in the afternoon.

Multi-Layered Security Measures in Place

To maintain order during the counting process, a comprehensive three-tier security system has been implemented. Senior police officials stated that personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Tripura State Rifles, and state police have been deployed in and around the counting centre.

In addition, prohibitory orders have been enforced within a 100-metre radius of the venue under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. These restrictions came into effect early Monday morning and will remain in force until the counting concludes.

Voter Participation and Background

The bypoll recorded a turnout of nearly 80 percent among the 46,142 registered voters, which included over 23,000 women voters. The election was necessitated following the passing of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December last year. He had been a prominent political figure, winning multiple terms from the constituency under both Congress and BJP affiliations.

Political Contest Intensifies

The Dharmanagar seat has historically alternated between major political parties, primarily the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party since 2008. The CPI(M) last secured the constituency in 2003.

This by-election has witnessed a multi-cornered contest, making the outcome less predictable. Six candidates are in the fray, representing national and regional parties as well as an independent contender.

Among the prominent candidates are BJP’s Jahar Chakraborti, Congress leader Chayan Bhattacharjee, and CPI(M)-backed candidate Amitabha Datta, who had previously won the seat in 2003. Chakraborti currently holds a key organizational role within the BJP at the district level.

Other candidates from smaller political parties and an independent entrant have further added to the competitive nature of the election.

Shifting Political Alliances

A notable aspect of this bypoll is the absence of a united opposition front. While the Congress and Left parties had previously collaborated during the 2023 Assembly elections, they chose to contest separately this time. This shift has introduced new dynamics into the electoral contest.

In the last Assembly election, Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee, supported by Left parties, narrowly lost to BJP’s Biswa Bandhu Sen by less than a thousand votes, highlighting the closely fought nature of the constituency.

As counting progresses, political observers are closely watching the trends that will determine the next representative from this strategically important seat in Tripura.
