ElectionPolitics ElectionPolitics –  A fresh political confrontation has surfaced in Jharkhand after the controversy surrounding the nomination of Parimal Nathwani was resolved. With his candidature now officially accepted, attention has shifted to allegations of cross-voting, as both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claim that legislators from rival camps may support their respective candidates in the upcoming election.

Congress Predicts Support Beyond Its Own Numbers

The latest dispute began after senior Congress leaders asserted that several BJP legislators were unhappy with their party’s decision not to field an official candidate. Instead, the BJP has extended support to independent candidate Parimal Nathwani, a move that Congress leaders say has created dissatisfaction within the party ranks.

Former Jharkhand Congress chief Rajesh Thakur argued that some BJP lawmakers feel ignored and believe the decision has disappointed party workers. According to him, this dissatisfaction could result in cross-voting in favor of the Congress-backed candidate. He also expressed confidence that the Congress nominee would receive additional support from alliance partners, ensuring a comfortable victory.

Party Leaders Trade Sharp Accusations

Adding to the debate, Congress spokesperson Rakesh Sinha claimed that several BJP legislators remain committed to protecting Jharkhand’s political identity and may choose not to support a candidate viewed as an outsider. He suggested that such lawmakers could vote according to their conscience rather than follow the party line.

The BJP strongly rejected these claims and launched a counterattack against the ruling alliance. State BJP spokesperson Ajay Sah alleged that legislators within the governing coalition were vulnerable to inducements because of internal dissatisfaction. He claimed that some alliance members were unhappy over their exclusion from alleged benefits connected to the state’s sand mining operations.

According to Sah, the political trend witnessed in several other states could also emerge in Jharkhand, resulting in legislators from the ruling bloc supporting Nathwani. He maintained that the BJP-backed independent candidate has a realistic chance of winning if cross-voting occurs.

Nathwani’s Nomination Clears Legal Hurdle

The renewed political war follows the conclusion of a dispute over Nathwani’s nomination papers. His nomination had faced objections from Congress leaders, who raised concerns regarding certain discrepancies in the documents submitted.

After remaining under scrutiny for two days, election authorities eventually accepted the nomination, bringing the procedural controversy to an end. However, the resolution quickly gave way to a new round of political accusations and counterclaims over voting loyalties.

Numbers Favor Grand Alliance on Paper

The arithmetic in the Jharkhand Assembly currently appears to favor the ruling Grand Alliance. The coalition holds 56 legislators, including 34 from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Since a candidate requires 28 votes to secure victory for a seat, JMM alone has sufficient strength to guarantee success for one of its nominees. After allocating the required first-preference votes, the party is expected to retain a number of surplus votes.

Congress currently has 16 legislators in the Assembly. In addition, the alliance includes four members from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and two legislators from CPI(ML). If all coalition partners remain united and vote according to the alliance strategy, Congress leaders believe their candidate is positioned to win comfortably.

NDA Relies on Potential Cross-Voting

On the opposition side, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has thrown its support behind Nathwani rather than fielding a BJP candidate. The alliance presently controls 24 votes in the Assembly, including 21 from the BJP and one each from AJSU, JD(U), and LJP.

With the required winning figure higher than its current strength, Nathwani’s prospects largely depend on support from outside the NDA camp. As a result, the possibility of cross-voting has become the central issue in the political debate, with both the ruling alliance and the opposition expressing confidence that legislators from rival parties may ultimately vote in their favor.
