ElectionNews – Congress Raises Questions Over Rejection of Rajya Sabha Nomination

ElectionNews –   The Congress party has sharply criticized the rejection of its Rajya Sabha candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination from Madhya Pradesh, alleging that the decision was based on incorrect interpretation of election rules and lacked a reasonable legal foundation.

Congress questions rajya sabha nomination rejection

Candidate Defends Disclosure in Election Documents

Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi alongside senior leaders from the Madhya Pradesh Congress unit, Meenakshi Natarajan maintained that all mandatory information had been correctly provided in the nomination documents. She explained that Form 26, which candidates are required to submit, did not contain any section asking for details of private complaints or notices.

According to Natarajan, she filled the form as required and marked relevant sections as “Not Applicable” because no criminal case is currently pending against her. She stated that the only matter linked to her is a legal notice, details of which were already shared with election authorities through supporting documents. Since the issue is currently before the Supreme Court, she declined to comment extensively on the legal proceedings.

Congress Calls Rejection Unprecedented

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari described the development as an unusual event in Indian electoral politics. He claimed that the party’s united approach in the Rajya Sabha contest had created concern within the BJP leadership.

Patwari alleged that political tactics generally associated with local-level elections were employed during the Rajya Sabha process. He argued that the Congress had demonstrated organizational strength and cohesion, which prompted efforts to prevent the party from securing representation in the Upper House.

Concerns Raised Over Democratic Institutions

Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Madhya Pradesh, Umang Singhar, expressed broader concerns about the state of democratic institutions. He alleged that excessive concentration of executive authority, limited legislative oversight, and restrictions on freedom of expression were creating challenges for democratic functioning.

Singhar said the developments surrounding the Rajya Sabha election should encourage a wider discussion about electoral fairness and institutional accountability.

Party Statement Targets BJP and Election Authorities

In an official statement, the Congress portrayed the Rajya Sabha contest as a choice between two contrasting political backgrounds. The party argued that its candidate represented constitutional values and ordinary citizens, while accusing the BJP of supporting interests linked to powerful corporate groups.

The Congress also asserted that the BJP lacked sufficient legislative support to comfortably secure a third Rajya Sabha seat from Madhya Pradesh. According to the party, attempts to gain additional support were unsuccessful, leading to efforts aimed at disqualifying its candidate.

The party maintained that the Returning Officer’s decision relied on an incorrect understanding of disclosure requirements and insisted that no pending criminal case existed against Natarajan at the time of nomination.

Allegations of Unequal Treatment

Congress leaders further alleged that election authorities had adopted different standards while examining nomination papers in separate states. The party claimed that while Natarajan’s nomination faced strict scrutiny, candidates in other contests were given opportunities to correct or clarify deficiencies in their filings.

On this basis, the Congress accused both the BJP and the Election Commission of acting in a manner that unfairly influenced the electoral outcome. The party described the rejection as politically motivated and pledged to continue challenging the decision through legal channels.

Supreme Court Challenge Continues

The Congress had fielded Meenakshi Natarajan as its only candidate for the Rajya Sabha election scheduled for June 18. However, her nomination was rejected by the Returning Officer, who stated that information related to a court complaint in Telangana had not been disclosed in the submitted affidavit.

Following the rejection, Natarajan approached the Supreme Court seeking relief. Meanwhile, BJP candidates Tarun Chugh, Rajneesh Agarwal, and Mahesh Kewat were declared elected unopposed from Madhya Pradesh.
