High-Level Meetings Scheduled in Delhi

Senior leaders from Kerala, including V. D. Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph, are expected to meet Congress president Mallikarjuna Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi to finalise the leadership question. The decision is being closely watched not only within Kerala but also across national political circles, as it could shape the future course of the Congress party in the state.

The Congress-led UDF achieved a major electoral breakthrough by winning 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, ending the decade-long rule of the Left Democratic Front led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Venugopal Gains Strong Legislative Support

At the centre of the internal discussions is K. C. Venugopal, who has reportedly secured the backing of a large section of Congress legislators. Party insiders indicate that a majority of MLAs favoured Venugopal during consultations conducted by party observers, citing his organisational experience and influence within the national leadership structure.

Supporters of Venugopal believe his close coordination with the party’s central leadership could help maintain stability within the government and ensure smoother administration in the coming years. His supporters also argue that his experience in national politics gives him an advantage during a politically sensitive period for the party.

Public Mood Appears to Favour Satheesan

Despite the legislative support for Venugopal, public opinion in Kerala appears to be leaning strongly towards Satheesan, who played a visible role in leading the opposition campaign against the Left government during the election. Supporters across several districts have organised demonstrations and public gatherings demanding that he be chosen for the top post.

However, sections of the Congress leadership are reportedly unhappy with the public pressure campaigns carried out in support of Satheesan. Senior party figures are understood to have raised concerns that such demonstrations could be viewed as undermining party discipline and challenging the authority of the high command.

Muslim League Signals Its Position

The role of the Indian Union Muslim League has also become important in the ongoing consultations. Sources suggest that the party leadership, led by Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, has communicated its preference for Satheesan to senior Congress leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Leaders within the alliance reportedly believe that public sentiment should play a major role in the final decision. There are also concerns within alliance circles that overlooking Satheesan could create political strain within the UDF at a critical moment.

Chennithala Emerges as Possible Compromise Candidate

Amid the ongoing competition between the two main camps, Chennithala is also being discussed as a possible consensus choice if the leadership fails to arrive at a clear agreement. His supporters point to his administrative background and long political experience as factors that could help balance competing interests within the party.

Observers who reviewed the political situation in Kerala have reportedly described the atmosphere as highly sensitive, with legislative support and public opinion appearing divided between different leaders. The Congress leadership is expected to take a final decision after Saturday’s consultations in Delhi.
