ElectionCampaign – Vijay Schedules Chennai Roadshows Amid Tight Police Conditions

ElectionCampaign –  Actor-turned-politician Vijay, who leads Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is set to campaign in Chennai on Wednesday in support of his party’s candidates contesting key constituencies. The planned appearances come shortly after a campaign disruption in Tiruppur, highlighting both the momentum and challenges surrounding his political debut ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Campaign Plans in Key Chennai Constituencies

According to official permissions, Vijay will first campaign in the T Nagar Assembly constituency in support of candidate N Anand. The event is scheduled to take place on Muthurangan Road between 4 pm and 5 pm. Authorities have capped attendance at 2,500 people and imposed 27 specific conditions to ensure public safety and crowd control.

Later in the evening, Vijay will move to the Egmore constituency, where he will back party candidate Rajmohan. This second campaign event will be held on Ritherdon Road in Purasawalkam from 6 pm to 8 pm. For this gathering, the police have limited participation to 1,000 individuals and outlined 20 conditions that organizers must strictly follow.

Officials emphasized that these restrictions are intended to prevent overcrowding and maintain order during campaign activities, especially in densely populated urban areas.

Tiruppur Rally Disrupted by Heat and Overcrowding

The Chennai campaign follows an incident in Tiruppur district on Tuesday, where a major rally organized by TVK was called off after several attendees fell ill. Reports indicate that at least 15 supporters, including 13 women and two men, fainted due to intense heat and overcrowding.

The situation unfolded as large crowds began assembling at the venue as early as 10 a.m., hours before Vijay’s scheduled address. With temperatures rising significantly through the afternoon, conditions became increasingly difficult for those gathered.

Vijay arrived at the venue around 4:45 p.m., but by then, multiple cases of heat exhaustion had already been reported. Emergency services transported those affected to nearby hospitals for treatment. Following the incident, police advised against proceeding with the planned six-kilometre roadshow, leading to its cancellation.

Rising Political Stakes Ahead of Polling Day

Tamil Nadu is set to vote in a single phase on April 23, with counting scheduled for May 4. The upcoming election is expected to witness a closely contested battle among major alliances and emerging players.

The primary competition is anticipated between the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and the AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance. Both alliances include several prominent regional and national parties, making the electoral landscape highly competitive.

Vijay’s entry into politics through TVK has added a new dimension to the contest. His popularity as a film star has drawn significant attention, and his campaign events have seen large turnouts across multiple districts.

A Three-Way Contest Takes Shape

With TVK stepping into the fray, political observers suggest that the election could evolve into a three-cornered contest. While established alliances retain strong organizational networks, Vijay’s appeal among younger voters and first-time participants may influence voting patterns in select constituencies.

However, recent events such as the Tiruppur rally disruption underline the logistical challenges of managing large crowds during peak summer conditions. Authorities appear to be taking a cautious approach in Chennai by enforcing strict participation limits and safety measures.

As campaigning intensifies in the final days leading up to polling, all parties are expected to focus on maximizing outreach while ensuring compliance with safety guidelines.
