Election Update – VCK Reviews TVK Appeal Amid Tamil Nadu Power Struggle
Election Update – Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol Thirumavalavan has announced that the party’s senior leadership will hold an important meeting to assess the rapidly changing political situation in Tamil Nadu. The discussions are expected to focus on government formation efforts, including the request made by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) seeking VCK’s backing.

VCK Leadership to Decide Future Political Position
Speaking to reporters outside his Chennai residence on Friday, Thirumavalavan said the party’s high-level committee would examine all recent political developments before taking any final decision. He stated that the leadership intends to carefully review the present crisis and determine the party’s future course after internal consultations.
The VCK leader confirmed that TVK’s appeal for support in forming a government would be part of the discussions. He also noted that the party continues to remain associated with the DMK-led alliance and would deliberate on how that relationship should move forward under the current circumstances.
Governor’s Role Draws Political Criticism
Thirumavalavan also criticised the Governor’s approach to the government formation process in the state. According to him, the Governor’s handling of the situation has raised concerns among opposition parties. He remarked that the constitutional office should function with greater fairness and transparency during a politically sensitive phase.
The remarks came after Governor Arlekar recently met TVK chief Vijay at Lok Bhavan. During the interaction, the Governor reportedly informed the actor-turned-politician that sufficient legislative support necessary to form a government had not yet been demonstrated.
TVK Faces Numbers Challenge in Assembly
Sources familiar with the development indicated that the Governor asked TVK to provide clarity regarding the number of legislators supporting its claim. The discussion reportedly centred on whether the party could secure the majority mark required in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
In the recent Assembly elections, TVK secured 108 seats, while Congress won five seats, taking the combined tally of the alliance to 112. However, the coalition still remains short of the 118 seats required to achieve a simple majority in the House.
The election outcome resulted in a fractured mandate, creating uncertainty over the next government in Tamil Nadu. Since the results were announced, TVK has been actively reaching out to regional parties and independent legislators in an effort to strengthen its numbers and build a stable alliance.
VCK Raises Concerns Over Political Pressure
On Thursday, Thirumavalavan alleged that the alliance between TVK and Congress had led to increased involvement from the BJP-led Central government. He claimed that political pressure was being exerted after Congress extended support to TVK in the state.
The VCK chief also publicly urged the Governor to invite Vijay to form the government, arguing that democratic norms should be respected during the ongoing political process. His remarks added another layer to the already intense political debate unfolding in Tamil Nadu after the closely contested election results.
As coalition negotiations continue, attention now remains fixed on the outcome of the VCK leadership meeting, which could play a significant role in determining the direction of government formation efforts in the state.
