Election – Karnataka By-Election Counting Begins With Early Leads Emerging

Election – The counting of votes for two key Assembly by-elections in Karnataka began on Monday morning, setting the stage for an important political contest between the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Early trends from both constituencies—Davanagere South and Bagalkot—have drawn close attention as both parties look to strengthen their positions.

Karnataka bypoll counting early leads

Early Trends in Davanagere South

Initial counting in the Davanagere South constituency indicates a competitive race. After the first round, BJP candidate Srinivasa T. Dasakariyappa has taken a narrow lead over Congress nominee Samarth Mallikarjun. Srinivasa secured 3,711 votes, while Mallikarjun followed with 3,134 votes.

Officials have confirmed that counting in this constituency will proceed through 21 rounds, meaning the early lead may shift as more ballots are counted. The seat has gained significant attention due to the political legacy associated with it and the closely matched candidates.

Bagalkot Shows Strong Congress Lead

In contrast, the Bagalkot constituency has shown a clear early advantage for the Congress party. After two rounds of counting, Congress candidate Umesh Meti has established a lead exceeding 5,000 votes over BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath.

Umesh Meti has polled 10,996 votes so far, compared to 5,980 votes for his opponent. Counting in Bagalkot is scheduled to continue over 23 rounds, leaving room for further developments, though the early margin suggests a strong start for Congress.

Background of the Bagalkot Contest

The by-election in Bagalkot was held following the passing of senior leader H.Y. Meti. His son, Umesh Meti, entered the race as the Congress candidate, facing a direct challenge from BJP’s Veeranna Charantimath.

The campaign saw active involvement from top leadership, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah personally campaigning for the Congress candidate. The outcome is being closely watched as it may reflect public sentiment in the region following the leadership transition.

Counting Arrangements and Security Measures

Authorities began the counting process at 8 a.m., ensuring strict adherence to election protocols. In Bagalkot, the process is being carried out across 14 tables over multiple rounds. A total of 63 personnel have been deployed to oversee the operation.

Officials confirmed that all arrangements were completed in advance, including security and monitoring systems. Candidates and their representatives were present when the strongroom containing the electronic voting machines was opened earlier in the morning.

Davanagere South: A High-Stakes Battle

The by-election in Davanagere South was necessitated by the death of senior Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa. The Congress fielded his grandson, Samarth Mallikarjun, hoping to retain the seat within the family’s political legacy.

The BJP, on the other hand, nominated Srinivasa T. Dasakariyappa, a leader representing marginalized communities, aiming to make inroads in the constituency. The contest has become politically significant, with both parties investing considerable effort in campaigning.

Political Significance and Internal Developments

The stakes are particularly high for the Congress leadership, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. The party also faced internal challenges, having removed two members of the legislative council over alleged anti-party activities during the candidate selection process.

For the BJP, the election presents an opportunity to secure its first victory in this Assembly segment, making the contest even more crucial for both sides.

Monitoring and Transparency Measures

Election officials have emphasized transparency throughout the counting process. In Davanagere South, 14 tables have been arranged, each staffed with four personnel, including a micro observer.

Postal ballots were counted before the main counting began, while electronic voting machines were opened shortly after. CCTV surveillance has been implemented across all counting tables to ensure accountability and smooth conduct.

As counting progresses through multiple rounds in both constituencies, final results are expected later in the day. The outcomes will play a key role in shaping the political narrative in Karnataka in the coming months.
