Election – Berhampore Contest Intensifies With Three-Way Political Showdown
Election – The Berhampore Assembly constituency has become one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in the upcoming West Bengal elections, drawing attention due to the return of a seasoned political figure and a competitive three-cornered contest. Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has entered the fray, marking his comeback to state-level politics after nearly three decades, a move that has sparked strong reactions from rival parties.

Key Candidates and Political Stakes
This election in Berhampore is shaping up as a triangular contest. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury represents the Congress, while the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded sitting MLA Subrata Moitra, also known as Kanchan. The Trinamool Congress has nominated Naru Gopal Mukherjee, who currently serves as the chairperson of the Berhampore Municipality.
The presence of these three candidates has heightened the political significance of the constituency, with each party aiming to strengthen its position in a region known for its shifting voter preferences.
TMC Questions Chowdhury’s Relevance
Trinamool Congress candidate Naru Gopal Mukherjee has openly criticized Chowdhury’s return to state politics. He argued that the Congress leader’s decision to contest stems from political necessity rather than strength.
According to Mukherjee, Chowdhury’s defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections reflects a decline in his influence. He suggested that the electoral contest in Berhampore is primarily between the BJP and the TMC, downplaying the role of Congress and Left parties in the region.
Mukherjee also stated that the broader political narrative in West Bengal revolves around the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and the challenge posed by the BJP, indicating that smaller players may struggle to make a significant impact.
BJP Raises Concerns Over Community Issues
BJP candidate Subrata Moitra has also targeted Chowdhury, raising questions about his stance on issues affecting different communities. Moitra alleged that Chowdhury has not consistently addressed concerns related to Hindu citizens while making selective remarks on religious matters.
He emphasized that the BJP’s approach focuses on development and welfare for all communities, crediting central government initiatives for benefiting both Hindus and Muslims. Moitra further claimed that political strategies involving external leaders are being used to influence the outcome in Berhampore.
Allegations Around Campaign Support
Moitra also suggested that the presence of leaders like Asaduddin Owaisi in West Bengal could indirectly benefit Chowdhury’s campaign. He indicated that certain smaller parties might step aside, potentially consolidating votes in favor of specific candidates.
However, these claims remain part of ongoing political exchanges, with no official confirmation regarding alliances or withdrawals.
Chowdhury Expresses Confidence
Despite the criticism, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has expressed confidence in his prospects. He stated that he expects to receive strong support from voters in the upcoming election.
Chowdhury’s return to the Assembly marks a significant shift in his political journey. A five-time Member of Parliament from Baharampur, he last served as an MLA after winning from Nabagram in 1996 before moving to national politics in 1999.
Background of Recent Electoral Defeat
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Chowdhury lost the Baharampur parliamentary seat to Trinamool Congress candidate Yusuf Pathan, a former international cricketer. This defeat ended his long-standing hold over the constituency and has influenced his decision to re-enter state politics.
Yusuf Pathan, while commenting on the contest, extended his best wishes to Chowdhury but also highlighted the work done by the TMC candidate in the region, suggesting that local performance could play a decisive role.
Election Schedule and Process
The West Bengal Assembly elections will be conducted in two phases. The first phase of polling is scheduled for April 23, followed by the second phase on April 29. Vote counting will take place on May 4.
As per the Election Commission of India, the notification for the first phase has already been issued. Candidates have until April 6 to file their nominations, with scrutiny scheduled for April 7. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is April 9.
With multiple prominent figures contesting and sharp political exchanges underway, the Berhampore seat is expected to remain a focal point as the election campaign progresses.
