EducationPolicy – Delhi University Hostel Food Segregation Plea Reaches High Court

EducationPolicy –  A legal dispute concerning food arrangements in Delhi University hostels has reached the Delhi High Court after a student sought separate vegetarian dining facilities across university campuses.

Educationpolicy du hostel food plea

A student of the University of Delhi has approached the Delhi High Court demanding dedicated vegetarian food arrangements in hostel messes and college canteens. The petition raises concerns related to hygiene standards, food preparation practices, and the rights of students who follow strict vegetarian diets.

Demand for Separate Cooking and Serving Areas

The petition was filed by Vijeta, a student residing in a women’s hostel affiliated with Delhi University. In her plea, she requested the court to direct university authorities to create separate vegetarian kitchen spaces and serving counters within hostel messes and canteens.

The plea further asked for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items to be stored separately to avoid any form of cross-contamination. According to the petitioner, the current arrangement does not adequately support students who maintain strict vegetarian eating habits on religious, cultural, or personal grounds.

Student Alleges Lack of Proper Facilities

In the court filing, the student claimed she had personally faced inconvenience because of the absence of exclusively vegetarian meal facilities inside hostel premises. She stated that the existing mess system prevented her from comfortably consuming meals within the hostel environment.

The petition also mentioned that several requests had earlier been submitted to hostel authorities and university officials seeking corrective measures. However, the petitioner alleged that no meaningful action was taken despite repeated representations.

Court Asked to Frame Clear Policy

The plea, submitted through advocate Barun Kumar Sinha, urged the High Court to formulate guidelines ensuring hygienic vegetarian food services within educational institutions under Delhi University.

Among the key demands, the petitioner sought establishment of separate vegetarian mess facilities located at a suitable distance from mixed food preparation areas. The petition also called for implementation of food safety standards and creation of a transparent institutional policy for students with strict dietary preferences.

Additionally, the student requested revision of mess charges and establishment of a grievance redressal system that would allow students to report food-related complaints and seek timely solutions.

Matter Likely to Be Heard Soon

The case is expected to come up for hearing before the Delhi High Court in the coming days. The petition argues that the present arrangement violates hygiene norms as well as constitutional protections connected to individual food choices and dignity.

The matter has drawn attention because it touches upon broader debates around dietary preferences, institutional responsibility, and accommodation of diverse student needs in universities.

Other Significant Matters Before Delhi High Court

In another matter, rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh informed the Delhi High Court that he had no connection with the controversial song titled “Volume 1.” The singer told the court that he wanted the association with the track removed, asserting that the song did not belong to him. The court has directed him to submit an affidavit and fixed the next hearing for May 19.

Separately, the High Court permitted inspection of a disputed will linked to the Udaipur royal family inheritance case involving the late Arvind Singh Mewar. The dispute was initiated by his daughter Padmaja, who has questioned the authenticity of signatures on the document and requested forensic examination. Legal representatives and handwriting experts have been allowed to inspect the will on May 15 under court supervision.

The court is also scheduled to hear a plea filed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor seeking protection of his personality rights. The petition requests action against alleged misuse of his image, name, and voice through deepfake videos and AI-generated promotional material circulated online.
