Education Rankings –  The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has strengthened its standing among the world’s leading academic institutions after securing the 118th position in the QS World University Rankings 2027, making it the highest-ranked university from India in the latest edition of the global assessment.

Iit delhi best ever qs global ranking performance

The achievement represents a five-place improvement over the institute’s ranking in the previous year and equals the best position ever attained by an Indian institution in the widely followed international rankings. The latest results highlight IIT Delhi’s steady progress in enhancing its academic reputation, research influence and graduate outcomes on the global stage.

Steady Rise in International Rankings

Over the past few years, IIT Delhi has recorded consistent growth in the QS rankings. From being placed 197th in the 2024 edition, the institution has advanced to 118th in the 2027 rankings, reflecting a remarkable rise of 79 positions within four years.

The improvement is being viewed as a sign of the institute’s growing international visibility and its efforts to strengthen teaching, research and industry engagement. The ranking also reflects the increasing recognition of Indian higher education institutions in global academic circles.

Strong Employer Recognition Boosts Performance

One of the major factors contributing to IIT Delhi’s improved position was its performance in the Employer Reputation category. The institute climbed 11 places to secure the 39th rank worldwide in this indicator.

The metric evaluates how employers perceive graduates from different universities and identifies institutions that are considered successful in preparing students for professional careers. A stronger ranking in this category suggests that IIT Delhi graduates continue to be highly valued across industries and employment sectors.

Significant Gains in Graduate Outcomes

The institute also made notable progress in the Employment Outcomes indicator, moving up by 60 positions compared with the previous assessment.

This measure examines how effectively universities support career success and the professional achievements of their alumni. The improvement indicates stronger graduate employability and highlights the impact IIT Delhi alumni are making across various fields and industries around the world.

Research Impact Continues to Improve

Research performance also played a key role in the institution’s advancement. IIT Delhi registered a gain of 26 positions in the Citations per Faculty category.

This indicator measures the average number of citations received by research publications produced by faculty members. It is widely regarded as an important benchmark for evaluating the quality, influence and reach of an institution’s scientific research output. The improvement reflects growing international recognition of the institute’s research contributions.

Leadership Emphasises Long-Term Academic Goals

Commenting on the achievement, Professor Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean of Planning and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said the institute remains focused on delivering high-quality and affordable technological education while expanding its global academic presence.

He noted that curriculum reforms, infrastructure development and greater international collaboration are expected to further strengthen the institution’s academic standards and global impact in the years ahead. According to him, rankings are viewed as a result of sustained institutional efforts rather than a primary objective.

Success Builds on Subject-Wise Achievements

The latest ranking milestone follows another strong showing by IIT Delhi in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 released earlier this year.

Five academic disciplines—Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering and Civil Engineering—earned places among the world’s top 50. In addition, the institute secured the 36th position globally in the Engineering and Technology category, further reinforcing its reputation as one of the leading centres for technical education and research.

As global competition among universities continues to intensify, IIT Delhi’s latest performance reflects its growing influence in education, innovation and research, while strengthening India’s presence in international higher education rankings.
