Education – Delhi Government Highlights Student Support at DU Diamond Jubilee Celebration

Education -Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the importance of empowering young people through quality education while addressing the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Delhi University’s Shaheed Bhagat Singh College on Thursday. She said the future growth of the country depends on a strong education system and a capable younger generation. According to the Chief Minister, the Delhi government is working to improve academic infrastructure and student facilities to strengthen the capital’s position as an international education destination.

Government Plans Focus on Student Infrastructure

During the event, Gupta announced that the government is exploring a proposal to establish hostel accommodation for Delhi University students at the proposed new campus of Indira Gandhi University. She noted that expanding residential facilities would help students from different regions access higher education more comfortably while supporting the city’s long-term academic development goals.

Affordable Meals and Better Transport for Students

The Chief Minister also shared that an Atal Canteen will begin operations at the Delhi University campus on August 16. The initiative aims to provide nutritious meals to students at a subsidized price of ₹5. Alongside this, she announced that 50 additional U-Special bus routes will be introduced in the near future to improve daily transportation for university students and make commuting more convenient.

Youth Encouraged to Support Community Development

Addressing students and faculty members, Gupta urged educational institutions to contribute beyond classroom learning by actively engaging with nearby communities. She encouraged colleges to inspire children living in surrounding areas and help them pursue their educational ambitions. She expressed confidence that the creativity, determination and ideas of young people would play a significant role in achieving the vision of a developed India and a developed Delhi.

Proposal for Girls’ Hostel Submitted

On the occasion, the college administration presented a proposal seeking government support for constructing a girls’ hostel. The proposal requested that suitable land be allocated to shift Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College to another location, allowing the existing campus to be used for the hostel project.

College officials explained that a large number of female students travel from neighbouring states to study at the institution. They stated that the absence of hostel accommodation creates concerns related to safety, convenience and the continuity of higher education. They expressed hope that dedicated residential facilities would encourage greater access to education for women and improve the overall student experience.

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Mark College Milestone

As part of the Diamond Jubilee programme, attendees were shown a virtual presentation highlighting the institution’s achievements and development over the past six decades. The presentation reflected the college’s academic journey, milestones and contribution to higher education since its establishment.

The event also featured the unveiling of the year-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations calendar by the Chief Minister. In addition, she launched the QR code for the college’s digital archives, giving students, alumni and visitors easier access to important historical records and documents related to the institution’s 60-year legacy.
