Education – Andhra University Marks Centenary with Focus on Future Growth
Education – Andhra University celebrated its 100-year milestone with a renewed focus on academic excellence and institutional growth.

Andhra University’s centenary celebrations brought together academic leaders, government officials, and alumni to reflect on its long-standing contribution to education and discuss the path ahead. The event, held at the Convention Centre on Beach Road, highlighted the institution’s role in shaping intellectual and social progress over the past century.
Call to Strengthen Academic Excellence
Addressing the gathering, HRD Secretary Kona Sashidhar emphasized the university’s historical importance and urged stakeholders to work towards making it one of the leading institutions in the country. He spoke about his personal connection with Visakhapatnam and the university, noting that its legacy continues to inspire generations.
He explained that the state government is actively working on policies aimed at improving higher education standards. According to him, efforts are underway to restore the institution’s earlier reputation while adapting to modern academic needs. He also acknowledged the contributions of past leaders whose vision laid the foundation for the university’s growth.
Adapting to Technological Change
Sashidhar highlighted the rapid pace of technological advancements and stressed the need for universities to balance traditional knowledge with innovation. He pointed out that academic institutions must prepare students to meet evolving global challenges by integrating new technologies into learning systems.
He further assured that the government would support infrastructure development and faculty recruitment to strengthen the university’s capabilities. These steps, he said, are essential to ensure that students receive quality education in a competitive environment.
Tribute to Founding Leadership
The programme began with floral tributes to Sir Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, the university’s founding Vice-Chancellor. Organisers noted that his vision played a crucial role in establishing a strong academic culture that continues to influence the institution today.
Speakers at the event underlined the importance of preserving the university’s traditions while embracing modern practices. They also emphasized the need to maintain academic integrity and foster a research-oriented environment.
Role of Alumni and Community
Sashidhar also spoke about the importance of alumni networks, stating that universities gain strength from their former students. He encouraged greater engagement with alumni to support institutional development and mentorship opportunities for current students.
Vice-Chancellor GP Rajasekhar echoed similar views, urging all stakeholders to place the university’s interests above individual priorities. He called for a collective effort to enhance the institution’s standing at both national and international levels.
Focus on Responsible Innovation
Alumni Association president KVV Rao described studying at Andhra University as a privilege and highlighted the need for responsible use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. He stressed that while innovation is necessary, it must be guided by ethical considerations.
Rao also advocated for creating a cleaner and safer campus environment. He suggested initiatives to make the university plastic-free and free from substance abuse, aligning with broader sustainability and wellness goals.
Felicitations and Participation
The event also included recognition of several distinguished individuals, including members of the governing body, faculty, and staff. Among the attendees was Mayank Kumari Devi of the Jaipur royal family, along with other notable guests who participated in the celebrations.
The centenary event served as both a reflection on the university’s achievements and a platform to outline its future direction. With renewed focus on innovation, infrastructure, and collaboration, Andhra University aims to strengthen its position in the evolving landscape of higher education.
