Earthquake – Disaster recovery efforts and international humanitarian support continue to expand – Venezuela has begun an extensive relief and reconstruction campaign following two powerful earthquakes that caused widespread destruction across several northern regions, leaving dozens dead and hundreds injured.
Governent Announces Emergency Recovery Measures
Venezuela’s acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, has unveiled a series of urgent initiatives aimed at accelerating rescue operations and rebuilding communities affected by Wednesday’s twin earthquakes. The government has prioritised clearing damaged infrastructure, restoring essential services, and supporting residents whose homes and businesses were impacted by the disaster.
According to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, authorities have directed private construction and engineering companies to deploy heavy machinery for debris removal. In addition, a financial assistance package worth 200 million USD has been established to support emergency response activities and long-term reconstruction. Special credit facilities will also be made available to business owners struggling to recover from the destruction.
International Coordination Underway
As rescue operations continue, Venezuela has also started coordinating international humanitarian assistance. Foreign Minister Yvan Gil confirmed that the government is working with foreign partners to facilitate incoming aid and ensure resources reach affected communities without delay.
Several countries from Latin America and other regions have expressed their support and offered assistance, reflecting a broad international response to one of Venezuela’s most severe natural disasters in recent history.
Powerful Earthquakes Leave Heavy Damage
The country was struck by two consecutive earthquakes on Wednesday, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. The strongest impact was reported in the north-central state of La Guaira, while the Caracas metropolitan area also suffered extensive structural damage.
Emergency officials continue to assess affected neighbourhoods as search-and-rescue teams work through collapsed buildings and damaged infrastructure. Authorities have confirmed that at least 32 people lost their lives, while more than 700 others sustained injuries. Rescue efforts remain ongoing as emergency responders search for survivors and provide medical assistance.
Global Leaders Extend Support
World leaders have responded with messages of solidarity and offers of practical assistance as Venezuela deals with the aftermath of the disaster.
US President Donald Trump said the United States is prepared to assist Venezuela and has instructed federal agencies to be ready for a rapid humanitarian response if requested. In a message shared on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump described the earthquakes as devastating and expressed condolences to those affected while reaffirming the country’s readiness to provide help.
Regional Partners Offer Humanitarian Aid
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also announced her government’s support for Venezuela. She said Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Secretariat has maintained close communication with Venezuelan authorities and has begun preparing humanitarian assistance based on the country’s immediate requirements.
According to Sheinbaum, Venezuela has initially requested specialised rescue personnel and healthcare support. She reaffirmed Mexico’s commitment to standing with the South American nation during the emergency.
El Salvador has likewise offered immediate assistance. President Nayib Bukele announced that a rescue contingent consisting of 300 emergency personnel, including rescuers and paramedics, is prepared to travel to Caracas. The team is expected to transport around 50 tons of rescue equipment, medicines, and other essential relief supplies to support ongoing emergency operations.
As recovery efforts continue, Venezuelan authorities remain focused on restoring essential services, assisting displaced residents, and coordinating both domestic and international resources to help affected communities rebuild after one of the country’s most destructive seismic events in decades.
