Earthquake – Moderate Tremor Hits Manipur After Strong Japan Quake Alerts
Earthquake – A mild earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Manipur early Tuesday morning, according to official data released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 5:59:33 IST, with its epicentre located in the Kamjong region. Authorities confirmed that the quake originated at a depth of 62 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface, classifying it as a moderately deep seismic event.

Details of the Manipur Earthquake
The NCS shared precise coordinates of the event, identifying its location at latitude 24.703 North and longitude 94.415 East. While earthquakes of this magnitude are generally not considered highly destructive, residents in parts of Manipur reported feeling brief shaking. As of now, there have been no immediate reports of damage to infrastructure or casualties.
Experts note that deeper earthquakes, such as this one, tend to disperse energy over a wider area, often reducing the intensity of surface-level impact. However, they can still be felt across considerable distances depending on geological conditions.
No Immediate Damage Reported
Local authorities have not issued any emergency warnings following the tremor. Routine monitoring is ongoing, and disaster management teams remain alert in case of aftershocks. Officials have advised residents to stay informed through official channels but emphasized that there is no cause for panic at this stage.
The northeastern region of India is known for its seismic sensitivity due to its proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. As a result, periodic earthquakes of varying intensity are not uncommon in the area.
Strong Earthquake Triggers Alerts in Japan
Just a day before the Manipur tremor, a significantly stronger earthquake struck parts of northeastern and northern Japan. The quake, initially measured at magnitude 7.4 and later revised to 7.5, occurred on Monday afternoon. It was recorded at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometres, which typically increases the potential for surface damage.
The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings along Japan’s Pacific coastline, particularly in Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. Authorities warned of possible waves reaching up to 3 metres in height.
Tsunami Activity and Safety Measures
Following the quake, a tsunami measuring around 80 centimetres was observed at Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture. Although this wave height was lower than initial projections, emergency services remained on high alert.
Japan’s meteorological authorities cautioned that aftershocks of similar magnitude could occur within the coming week. Residents in affected coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure.
Infrastructure and Transport Impact
Rail services in affected regions were disrupted as a safety measure. The East Japan Railway Company temporarily halted operations of the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori. This suspension was implemented to allow for safety inspections and ensure passenger security.
Despite the strength of the earthquake, operators of several nuclear power facilities, including those in Fukushima, Aomori, and Miyagi prefectures, reported no abnormalities. These updates provided reassurance amid concerns about potential infrastructure risks.
Government Response and Public Advisory
Japanese leadership urged calm and swift action. Citizens were instructed to follow evacuation protocols where necessary and remain attentive to official updates. Emergency response teams were deployed to assess conditions and assist affected communities.
The recent sequence of seismic events in both India and Japan highlights the unpredictable nature of tectonic activity across different regions. While the Manipur earthquake caused minimal disruption, the situation in Japan serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and rapid response systems.
Continued Monitoring
Seismological agencies in both countries continue to monitor aftershocks and geological developments closely. Authorities emphasize the importance of public awareness, preparedness drills, and adherence to safety advisories in earthquake-prone zones.
