Flooding – Prolonged Rain Brings Daily Life to a Standstill Across Nashik Road

Flooding – Nearly 20 hours of relentless rainfall severely affected normal life across Nashik Road and surrounding localities after showers began on Wednesday evening and continued until Thursday afternoon.

Persistent rainfall for almost 20 hours brought transportation, business activity and daily routines to a halt across Nashik Road and neighbouring areas. Water accumulated on several roads, while low-lying neighbourhoods, villages and informal settlements were covered with mud and stagnant water. Residents, traders, farmers and commuters struggled with the widespread impact of the downpour. As rain continued through the night, many shopkeepers and roadside vendors shut their businesses earlier than usual on Wednesday. The wet weather persisted until around 3 pm on Thursday, leaving markets, roads and commercial establishments largely deserted. Activity gradually resumed only after rainfall weakened later in the day.

Heavy Rain Disrupts Public Movement

Continuous showers created difficult conditions for people travelling across the region. Waterlogged roads slowed traffic, while several residential pockets experienced flooding due to poor drainage. Motorists faced delays as vehicles moved cautiously through submerged stretches, and pedestrians found it difficult to navigate muddy streets. Commercial activity remained limited for much of Thursday as customers stayed indoors and businesses waited for conditions to improve.

Fallen Trees Trigger Emergency Response

The intense rain and strong winds caused trees and large branches to collapse at eight different locations across the Nashik Road area. The affected sites included Jail Road, Siddheshwar Nagar, STP Plant Road, the road near the Blind School bus stop, Deolali village, Lingayat Colony, Jai Bhavani Road and the Vihitgaon-Wadner Road.

At Chehedi Naka, one tree fell onto a buffalo shed, although no injuries to people or animals were reported. Fire brigade teams responded promptly, using electric saws and other equipment to remove fallen trees and branches. Their efforts helped restore traffic movement and clear blocked roads in the affected locations.

Incomplete Drainage Work Adds to Flooding

Residents and farmers pointed to the unfinished underground stormwater drainage pipeline connecting Mathura Chowk in Vihitgaon with Sai Grand Lawns on Wadner Road as a major factor behind the flooding. Since the project remains incomplete, rainwater could not drain efficiently, leading to waterlogging in nearby residential areas and agricultural land.

Large pools of water spread across adjoining fields, causing damage to standing crops, according to local farmers. The flooding also created difficulties for motorists, as long sections of the road remained underwater for several hours. Commuters experienced extended travel times while authorities worked to manage the situation.

Recovery Begins After Rainfall Eases

As rainfall gradually reduced on Thursday afternoon, water levels started receding in several areas, allowing residents and businesses to return to routine activities. Shops reopened, traffic movement improved and markets slowly regained customers after remaining quiet for most of the day.

However, the prolonged spell of rain highlighted ongoing concerns about urban drainage infrastructure and flood preparedness in the region. Local residents expressed hope that pending drainage projects would be completed soon to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall during future monsoon spells.
